Ol' Meyer is at it again....

ESPN - Florida lineman suspended for upcoming season - College Football

Wilson fired a gun in the air and got a 1 year suspension. He was a red-shirt last year.

James bought marijuana with a basketball player and was suspended 1 game. He is one of their best return men.

hmm...

I can see a big suspension for firing a gun in the air..that's just stupid, but maybe not a year for that...but wait, he's a nobody. James, however, is gonna be needed for the UT game, so he'll only get a 1 game suspension. They may as well be sitting him so that he doesn't get too tired before us . I guess that Wilson took the fall so that Meyer looked like some tough punisher, while James could slip by and continue to play.

How much marijuana was involved? Misdemeanor amount or felony amount? Is James claiming innocence and fighting the charges? There are a lot of variables involved.

hmm. well, one of those acts certainly seems to be much more dangerous than the other. on a side note, were it not for the Iraq War I really think ending all or part of the war on drugs would be a mainstream issue in the 2008 presidential election.

The thing is, James was caught in a sting operation. And buying marijuana means he was 99.9% going to smoke it. Failing a drug test would warrant more than a 1 game suspension, wouldn't it?

I don't care about misdemeanor versus felony label. James had some pot on him and is suspended for a game and subject now to multpiple random drug tests. He got his second chance and if he blows it he needs to be dealt with much more severely at that time. See the other thread on this topic for more on that.

Wilson fired a gun, in anger, during a confrontation with another guy. He should be off the team for good, period. He does not deserve a second chance. It matters not to me whether it is a misdemeanor or a felony. I don't want him anywhere near the U of F and if it were up to me there would be no second chance for that offense.

Someone merge this with the other Urban Meyer thread, please. Getting redundant.

Very reasonable. James Banks was given that opportunity.....twice.

I don't see why everyone is so big on giving a ton of chances. If they've been caught once, how many times did they get away with it?

The debate to me as between James and Wilson is not about number of chances, its about severity of offense. Having a tiny amount of pot is not a good thing. Its criminal. But its not a major offense or threat to life or property. Firing a frickin rifle into the air to scare a guy during a confrontation is only slightly less dangerous than actually firing it at the guy. If he hit the guy or fired in his direction, there is no question but that Wilson would be in prison and not worrying about whether he can try to get on the team in '08. I think what he did is close enough that even if he avoids prison he still should not be in a Gator uniform.

I agree that firing a gun in the air is bad, but I don't think theres as big of a difference, punishment wise. 13 games compared to 1....I'd have given James a 3 game punishment, minimum.
