Cole Beasley: Not a Derek Dooley fan

In Dooley's defense, players at that level shouldn't exactly need specific instructions on how to run a post. Sounds like the same crap you hear with every coaching change.

Do not recall anyone being a fan of Doolander. This is not shocking at all. Precious aint so precious.

The Cowboys receivers were horribly mis-coached under Dooley. T. Williams has no game awareness at all. Beasley can only catch and fall. Dez Bryant went from a Top 3/Potential HOF WR when Dooley started to a guy no-one wants now.....

It's not all on Dooley for sure but he deserves a large portion of the blame....

You think all players from all the college systems show up and instantly know the precise routes in their drafting team’s offense? Jerry Rice dominated at Mississippi Valley State and would end up the GOAT, but he needed coaching up in Bill Walsh’s system. The Bears are excited this season about the potential of the new receivers in their new offensive scheme, but they’re doubling up as much as rules allow teaching them routes and fundamentals. The Cowboys have taken heat for their imprecise routes and dropped passes the past few seasons...after watching that Amazon show and listening to Cole (who’s carved out a pretty good career for himself) I say mystery solved

Route running is the most underrated skill for a WR, IMO. There is plenty a coach can teach a player, even on that level

Always see Northwestern’s coach Pat Fitzgerald mentioned when new openings materialize. Why? He got stomped by Butch.

I hope Cowboys continue to be mis-coached

Dooley is a more likeable guy than Butch.

He was honest about who he was.

Just not a very good coach.

Not in my book, Josh.

Butch may have been corny, and not as bright as he needed to be. May even have misled some of the players during recruitment (though that's all just conjecture). But he had some leadership skills.

Dooley was a leadership abomination. Frequently enjoyed the limelight while throwing his players under the bus, insulting their intelligence, hygiene, initiative...he turned insulting his own lads into reality TV events for the local media.

No, Butch is head and shoulders above Dooley in the leadership department. And a better human being, to everyone but Mack Crowder. Hehe.

If WRs not knowing the more mental, nuanced aspects of being a WR and not learning how to set up routes is not Dooley's fault, then does that mean that all of the time management/game awareness gaffes that Andy Reid teams are known for really not Andy Reid's fault?

JF, that is nailing it right there. People who say nothing to the current coach, then pile on after they are gone are pretty pathetic people in my book. Players and media whores embarrassing themselves yet again.

Beasley is not talking about the mental, nuanced aspects of being a WR. His criticism of Dooley was aimed at Dooley’s lack of teaching them how to run routes. I would hope an NFL WR who is being paid more than your average neurosurgeon knows the basics of route running without a coach’s instruction. Any the piling on after the coach is gone is cowardice as well.
