Mississippi State and Florida both waaaay higher than I'd have put them. A&M with Fisher, and LSU, both definitely have a better chance than them.

As for us, meh. Anything from 3-9 to 9-3 is possible. Let's ask this question again after we've played 4 games.

Then what fun would the off-season be?

Every question/ poll shouldn't be asked until Oct. But that wouldn't be much fun, would it?

That misses the point I made, Boca.

The unknowns about the Vols this off-season are massive. Much bigger than most teams. Significantly bigger even than teams with new coaches.

Dan Mullen's new at Florida. He's a good coach. He has a known amount of talent.

Jeremy Pruitt's new at Tennessee. He's a good coordinator, but what kind of head coach? And do we have significant talent on this team? Is it real talent that's just under-developed? Can it be developed in one off-season?

See? Every once in a while, a football team's situation bounces in a way that makes it a real enigma.

And that's why I say, let's talk again after 4 weeks. Then we'll know as much about the Vols as most fans know about their other teams already.

And you have seasons like 2005 where UT was supposed to contend for the BCS title. Nearly every season brings about surprises.

UT was ranked in the top 10 in pre-season 2016. UT struggled out of the gate with App. St. Many were left scratching their heads and were told that App St.'s small DL's and faking injuries were the reason the game was close.

See, last year you were all in on Butch Jones. UT went 4-8. Which unknowns did you miss last season? But UT had Butch! Now, you're all in that he didn't know his a$$ from a hole in the ground. Funny, isn't it.

Every season is pretty much an unknown for every team. FSU vs. Bama was a top 5 matchup last season. Oops. FSU's QB was hurt in the game. Not sure it would have mattered.

It's college football. Things happen. Teams that were supposed to be good, aren't. Auburn is a great example of this recently.

DAJ loves to point out, and has the data to prove it, that teams usually perform within a game or so of their talent. Every once in a while a season like Auburn's 3-9 or Tennessee's 4-8 happens, utterly unpredictable. But those anomolies are rare.

So yeah, we're in an unusually liquid place with the 2018 team. Just how it goes. Ask again 4 weeks into the season.

Wish there were a way to arbitrage this stuff. I don't think we'll win, but our odds are too low, while Florida's odds are way too high relatively speaking.

I think DAJ's info is typically correct but UT has been an an outlier for a while. Anomalies haven't been rare for UT.

I agree about checking the rankings around Oct. 1.

I think last year was the only outlier in Tennessee's recent history. Think they've played within a game or two of the expectation every year before that during Butch's tenure.

Maybe he'll see this thread and confirm or deny for us.

Well, part of that plays into my thinking in that can you put 100% trust in subjective rankings?

It's not that hard to see that Bama completely racks up every year in talent. But they have coaching to go with it.

But is there really a difference between the #4 and #13 class? Doesn't development, coaching, and schematics come into play?

Otherwise, how can UCF beat Auburn or those other examples of "systems" beating a higher ranked team.

Same odds to win it all as the Vegas Golden Knights prior to the season...

I'll buy my annual ticket at Caesar's this summer. :)

Look, brother, I get that it irks you that I wouldn't talk bad about Butch while he was our coach. I don't get why it irks you, but I guess knowing the 'why' isn't really so important.

But you should get past it. If you really disagree with me about something football, let's discuss it. But if you're just bouncing around on the trampoline to try to get a dig in about my support for a former coach, like you seem to be doing in this thread...why don't we just get past that.

Here's part of my code: while a player or a coach is wearing orange, I'm behind him. I'll talk about strengths and weaknesses, in an objective way, while being respectful. I won't trash him, no matter what. As long as he's wearing orange.

So I didn't join the blood fest last fall on these boards insulting Butch in every possible way. And I won't do that for any other player or coach. Not while they're one of our players or coaches. Ever.

You gotta get over that.

So we can actually talk about football.

It wasn't utterly unpredictable. I predicted it exactly. No quarterback and an awful returning defense. Sounds familiar.

Yes, blind pigs occasionally find acorns. Every unpredictable thing that happens in the universe was "predicted" (=wildly guessed) by some nut job or other.

Congrats on being the guy last summer who predicted we'd go 4-8. Have a link to that prediction? :good!:

It doesn't irk me that you stood 100% behind Butch Jones. It irks me that you, and others that thought the same way, can simply toss him under the bus and join the masses and treat the guy like worm feed.

I thought from day 1 that the UT job was bigger than Butch Jones. For that, I was labeled a nega-vol. I can deal with that. I also stated that since UT hitched its wagon to Butch that is was in everyone's best interest that Butch figure it out. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. As much as I couldn't stand his method of coaching, I don't wish ill-will for him. After all, he's making a ton of money from the UTAD.

That doesn't make me a better fan than you or vice versa. Some people start at the top and work down and others start at the bottom and work up. I'm sure you're in business of some sort and you'll find that's the way it is with most things.

Here's to Pruitt putting a team on the field with a fire in their belly that simply "gets after it!" Win or lose I can deal with the outcome as long as the team and coaches show up prepared.
