NOTES

The safeties and corners worked together, and Pruitt was visibly frustrated for the few minutes that we saw. He told a few players to go back and repeat the drill again, as you can see in our featured image from this afternoon.

It’s still a bit odd to see Tyler Byrd at defensive back. He looks stronger after this offseason, and he continues to stay in that large group with the corners and safeties. On Tuesday he took reps at safety with Baylen Buchanan at corner. Micah Abernathy was alongside him as well.

The offensive line continues to be a work in progress. With the lack of numbers at that position, I expect to see a lot of movement there throughout the spring. Ryan Johnson is working at center with a few different groups. He’s a guy who could see time at guard as well.

Lots of recruits continue to watch practice day in and day out. Lots more than in the past. Pruitt mentioned on Tuesday that he wants this program to be the “most accessible program to high schools in the country.” And it shows based on who’s allowed in practice. There were lots of high school coaches from across East Tennessee in attendance on Thursday.

* The OL unit remains the same, with Drew Richmond at LT, DeVante Brooks at LG, Ryan Johnson at C, Riley Locklear at RG and Marcus Tatum at RT.

Early enrollees Jerome Carvin and Ollie Lane routinely get extra coaching from Will Friend — and they’re getting plenty of reps as well with the limited numbers there. K’Rojhn Calbert was back out there again Thursday, taking reps at LG.

Tennessee’s quarterbacks and receivers struggled to battle the elements early in the route tree, but both units adjusted to the wind as the session progressed.

... Jarrett Guarantano tossed a couple dimes on corner patterns later in the drill. Jordan Murphy also had a diving catch during the session.

As we noted yesterday, Keller Chryst remains in town, and the Stanford grad transfer quarterback was simulating every rep behind Helton and the quarterbacks during each throw.

I imagine Jordan Allen and Austin Smith hear Chris Rumph’s voice in their sleep. Tennessee OLB coach continues to ride both players very hard thus far this spring. Rumph made Allen and Smith redo a pad level, strike drill twice Thursday, and he also had Darrell Taylor do push-ups following a lackluster effort.

Finally, the defensive backs spent the initial portion of practice on install, with head coach Jeremy Pruitt working closely with both the safeties and corners.

Working on the side, linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. made his first appearance at a spring practice thus far. The senior continues to recover from a minor knee procedure. Meanwhile, tailback Tim Jordan was also working with the S&C staff. The sophomore running back is recovering from an appendectomy surgery earlier this month.

Tennessee basketball star Grant Williams watched practice Thursday with AD Phillip Fulmer.

The quarterbacks were throwing passes from just outside the 20-yard line into the end zone, and there was an emphasis on routes into the corner of the end zones from both the slot and outside wide receivers.

Jarrett Guarantano delivered a pair of excellent throws to Brandon Johnson and walk-on Richard Mize, though the latter couldn't come up with the catch.

Will McBride overthrew Latrell Williams and underthrew Jordan Murphy, who had to make a sliding catch on the ball. The rest of the walk-ons struggled with their accuracy as well, often overthrowing their intended targets.

Position coach Will Friend spent most of his time during this period giving plenty of attention to freshman Ollie Lane. While three players were going in one rep, Friend stood behind Lane to get a close-up view on the technique he used. There was plenty of teaching and instruction during the drill.

On Thursday, Darrell Taylor dropped to the ground to do some push-ups as Rumph put his players through a contact drill.

The focus for the defensive backs for part of Thursday's early practice periods were on playing the ball in the air.

There was a Darrin Kirkland Jr. sighting at Thursday's practice.

The redshirt junior linebacker was working out on the side with an assistant strength coach alongside the same cast of players who have been doing so all spring. Kirkland has been out this spring after undergoing a minor procedure to have his knee cleaned up. Kirkland missed the entire 2017 season after tearing his meniscus in practice in August.

Pruitt didn't rule out Kirkland returning before the end of spring.

Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer, the Hall of Fame former coach of the Vols, again was out at Haslam Field watching practice.

He spent part of his visit chatting with Grant Williams, the star forward on Tennessee's Grant Williams.

Simonton - Kirkland and Jordan back at practice doing some work/ Kirkland with big knee wrap on

Keller Chryst doing some "simulated" reps with the Qbs

Rumph trying to break the OLBs. Been real hard on them, esp J Allen and A Smith

OL still short handed as are RBs, so Pruitt and company need to be able to depend on the D to lead the team and turn this thing around.

Austin Price said Guarantano had some good throws. Simonton was quick to point out he missed on most of the double move routes, then Price blamed the WRs for missing.

Will Ignont is a big ole boy. He's a Bama program size backer. Got a feeling he will romp some heads this season.
