NOTES
. Ty Chandler looks more well-rounded and not quite as skinny as he was as a freshman last year. He doesn’t look like he’s lost any of his zip on his movement, but he looks like he can bounce off tacklers better now. We’ll see once we get to see some scrimmage action how well he can actually do that.

Jarrett Guarantano still struggles a bit with putting touch on his passes.

Alontae Taylor has the speed I expected him to have, and I like what I saw from both him and Latrell Williams today on the field

One of my favorite things about Pruitt’s new staff at UT is David Johnson. He’s extremely vocal, intense, and a good teacher of the wide receiver position.

...Daniel Bituli acting as a vocal leader for the Vols’ linebackers. Bituli was encouraging players to check in and set up. He worked alongside Will Ignont, and Ignont looks bigger and stronger than last year.

Tracy Rocker heaped some praise on his unit early in practice, specifically complimenting Jonathan Kongbo, Alexis Johnson, Matthew Butler and Greg Emerson for good pad level during drill work.

Emerson continues to impress in his second week of collegiate football. The early enrollee has shown no ill affects from his broken leg and comes off the ball with power and quickness in drills. He’s holding 300 pounds well, too.

Ryan Thaxton and Jordan Allen were particularly drawing Rumph’s ire, with Allen later having to do more up-downs during the drill work.

Later in practice, Tennessee’s LBs and DBs worked together on combo-coverages. The Vols were installing Alabama’s pass-matching scheme. Jeremy Pruitt, Kevin Sherrer, Charles Kelly and Terry Fair were all involved in the install. They split the field and worked two plays back-to-back. The start of the drill consisted of Quart’e Sapp at the WILL with Abernathy at safety and Baylen Buchanan at CB. On the other side, Nigel Warrior was at safety with Will Ignont at linebacker and Marquill Osborne at corner. Shawn Shamburger repped with the 2s, as did Theo Jackson at safety.

Will McBride was hot on some close throws, while Jarrett Guarantano was corrected on ball placement several times by OC/QB coach Tyson Helton. Guarantano did unleash a couple sweet play-action bombs — an element we know will be a big part of Helton’s offense.

Dillion Bates continues to cross-train at both inside and outside linebacker. Tuesday he was working with the inside linebackers.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman K'Rojhn Calbert, who was limited to begin the spring after having knee surgery in August to address some preexisting problems, did some work with the rest of the offensive line during individual drills early in practice.

The 6-foot-5, 316-pounder appeared to be going through drills at left guard during the open-viewing portion of practice.

Princeton Fant continued to roll with the running backs as one of just three scholarship players in Chris Weinke's group. Ja'Quain Blakely remained with the tight ends, who operated again without Austin Pope, who was working out on the side with strength coach Craig Fitzgerald.

Tyler Byrd and Carlin Fils-aime continue to work in the secondary with Byrd at safety and Fils-aime at corner.

Offensive coordinator Tyson Helton has stated Tennessee will push the ball down the field vertically in the passing game, and the routes-on-air periods every practice seem to back up that claim.

It used to be notable if the Vols threw any deep passes in their early-practice timing work, but now it's a regular part of the script.

Guarantano delivered a pair of downfield completions to Marquez Callaway and Alontae Taylor, while Callaway later made a bobbling catch on a deep ball from McBride.

Helton seemed displeased with the ball placement for both quarterbacks on their underneath throws. McBride whistled one well wide of Latrell Williams on a slant. The Vols continue to work Brandon Johnson, Williams and Jacquez Jones out of the slot and Taylor outside.

Of the scholarship players, Drew Richmond and Nathan Niehaus are at left tackle, Devante Brooks is a left guard, Ryan Johnson is at center, Riley Locklear and Ollie Lane are at right guard and Marcus Tatum and Jerome Carvin are at right tackle.

The two freshmen, Lane and Carvin, continue to get plenty of reps next to each other in the second group.

Pruitt Quotes

“I’m coming off the field and I’m ticked off. I can’t tell if it’s because of the whole practice or the way the offense kicked our tail.”

"If the other team beats us because they're better than us, that's one thing. But it's another when you make mental mistakes, and we made a lot of those today."

"We don't have any starters...we have a rep chart. Everything is being evaluated right now."

“Everything we’re doing is new to what these guys are accustomed to. ... We’re trying to create a standard.”

“When you have the Orange & White game, some guys perform better in those situations and we need to know who those guys are.”

"We need our defensive backs to play more than one position. One, it helps them create value for themselves. But when you play 5 different defensive backs...you need versatility."

"We don't even know who the best football players are yet. We don't know who's going to get on the bus and go to the first game."

He pretty much said in a nice way that our previous staff sucked and didn't coach these players.

After watching the clips of the 4 practices, would love to know what CJP and staff really thought about what they and those young men inherited.

Almost every player I saw was out of juice. The off season weight room work is skewing the coach's impressions. There were a few sand baggers and a few people in better shape, but mostly players with broken down muscles learning technique.

Bates sounds like a man without a home.

And yeah, the “creating a standard” line about how “this is nothing these guys are accustomed to” is absolutely a dig at the old staff.
