VQ Highlights: Vol Practice 3-24 from Brent Hubbs on Vimeo

NOTES

Austin Smith really looks the part of a hybrid 3-4 linebacker. It will be interesting to see where he fits in on the Vols’ depth chart once the season begins, but if he can stay healthy, I think he can make an impact.

David Johnson, Tennessee’s receivers coach, is one of the more vocal coaches on staff. And he made sure to let his players know the importance of being vertical threats in the passing game today.

I’ve been fairly impressed with true freshman Jerome Carvin thus far. We haven’t seen any game-like situations to truly judge the offensive line on yet, but I like what I’ve seen from him in drills. He won’t have the same impact as a true freshman that Trey Smith did, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he comes in and fits into the two-deep in his first year on campus.

Jarrett Guarantano has worked on his mechanics and footwork, and so far it’s been paying off in basic QB drills. Time will tell if that translates to when he’s in an actual game or even in scrimmages, but I can see a bit of a difference thus far.

Wide receivers coach David Johnson focuses on fine details every rep. As a player dropped the ball, Johnson bellowed about a lack of focus the last six inches. The veteran teacher who goes by YAC has clearly shown through a couple of days how things are be done. As for the group, freshman Alontae Taylor is still learning a lot of details but the newcomer is showing some quick twitch work.

For the offensive line, it's about leverage. Assistant coach Will Friend was even coaching up players on how to hold the blocking pad for the linemen to work against. It's safe to say no one is playing low enough for Friend.

At linebacker, a lot of attention was being given to dropping into space in pass coverage and it appears that Daniel Bituli because of the repaired shoulder will indeed have some contact limitations this spring.

Rocker at one point restarted a drill because it wasn't done at the pace and effort he wanted. Rocker told one player, who was adjusting his shoe, “stop that non-sense, using that trick went out in the '50's.”

Byrd has been working with Charles Kelly and the rest of the safeties this week and again worked there on Saturday. The rising junior played cornerback in high school and still might get a look at that position, but for now it appears his home is at safety. Those players worked on their drops in coverage and shedding blocks during Saturday's early periods.

Second-year defensive backs Theo Jackson and Cheyenne Labruzza continue to work with the safeties as well.

If you didn't know Pruitt was Tennessee's head coach, you'd think he was the Vols' defensive backs coach. That's how hands-on he is with the position during individual drills. It shows a level of trust in the rest of his staff to let them coach their positions their way.

No detail slips by Sherrer, who got on one player for not having his helmet snapped. He didn't like his linebackers overstepping and lunging on their first steps in one drill and expressed displeasure toward multiple players when they didn't hit a blocking sled with the desired amount of power. If a player doesn't do a drill right, Sherrer makes them redo it.

Sherrer's group on Saturday included Daniel Bituli, Will Ignont, Quart'e Sapp, Dillon Bates, Shanon Reid, Solon Page III and walk-ons.

Tight end Eli Wolf joined wide receivers Jauan Jennings and D.J. Henderson, offensive linemen Trey Smith and K'Rojhn Calbert and safety Todd Kelly Jr. in going through a vigorous workout on the side with strength coach Craig Fitzgerald.

Those players, by the way, are in full gear during these workouts.

When people say “looks the part”, do they mean physically looks the part (like body type) or capability wise.

Can someone please ask TOS where Kirkland was today? Something has to be up.

At his news conference Pruitt said he'd probably be back in a couple weeks. Also said Jordan had his appendix removed over Spring Break.

Some injury updates per JP.....

-DKJr had a minor knee surgery to “get some things cleaned up”, will be out 2-3 weeks, might get in on the last 2-3 practices of Spring

-Tim Jordan had his appendix taken out during Spring break, expect him back in a couple weeks

-Bituli is practicing in individual drills, so he’s out there....but he’s not a full participant right now due to his recent shoulder surgery....expected to be full participant in the next week or so

OL is still a mess.. Bad coaching from the previous staff will take a long time to iron out.. Glad Friend is preaching Leverage rather than the reach and react crap

Some of the players look significantly better. We are improving with Fitzgerald's S&F program. We still have a long way to go.Earlier, cameras showed Eric Crosby squatting 535 lbs.Yesterday,Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts squatted 600 lbs.We are getting better, but a ways to get there. We will get there!GBO.

Exactly. He’s also teaching “strike” and impose your physicality on the guy in front of you, rather than Jones’ weak, finesse, matador OL techniques.

Friend should be able get the O-line is shape. If he does, it's not as bad as some posters are making it out to be. No doubt it will be better than last year. Change of O and blocking schemes, bigger/stronger, more developed with better technique. There is some good talent that just needs to work hard and get better. A lot of the guys in that position group were recruited by the top schools. Need Trey to be healthy and ready to go. Don't sleep on Brooks, he could develop into a good one.
