I was curious about other big name coaches and their first 5 years at their signature job. Butch is a good coach, but maybe not the elite. He will eventually bring us the title, but when is the question.

Butch Jones:
5-7, 7-6, 9-4, 9-4, 3-1

Mack Brown:
9-3,9-3,9-3,11-2,11-2 NC in year 12

Frank Beamer:
2-9, 3-8, 6-4, 6-5, 5-6

vin Dooley(just had to):
7-3, 6-4, 10-1, 7-4, 8-1

Mark Richt:
8-4, 13-1, 11-3, 10-2, 10-3

Lou Holtz:
5-6, 8-4, 12-0, 12-1, 9-3

Steve Spurrier:
9-2, 11-2, 10-2, 12-1, 12-1

Debo Sweeny:
4-3(interm), 9-5, 6-7, 10-4, 11-2, 11-2

Jim Mcelwain
10-4, 9-4, 2-1

Dan Mullen
5-7, 9-4, 7-6, 8-5, 7-6

Lord Saban
lsu: 8-4, 10-3, 8-5 ,13-1, 9-3
bama: 7-6, 12-2, 14-0, 10-3, 12-1, 12-1, 13-1, 11-2.......

Pete Caroll
6-6, 11-2, 12-1, 13-0, 12-1

Phil Fulmer
9-2, 8-4, 11-1, 10-2, 11-2, 13-0, 9-3, 8-4, 11-2, 8-5, 10-3, 10-3, 5-6, 9-4, 10-4, 5-7 Makes you laugh when we throw a coach under the bus that was 24-19 in their last 3 season all because Urban Myer was the young gun in the conference! I get it we were complacent we had a "legend" at Head Coach, wasn't making a splash on the recruiting trail, was struggling to find the next Cutcliff at OC. How are all those 5 stars on the recruiting trail turning out for us? The way the East has been Fulmer would have had us at 9+ wins every year since 2009

I see your point, but this is TN, you get paid for winning Conf. and NCAA Championships!! :banghead2:

If you can't do that in 5 or 6 years, sorry you gotta go!!

Do you realize we've won 1 natty in the last 50 years??? We've won 2 conference titles in the last 25 years. Think again about what you just said.

Maybe you should read Mack Brown's line again.

Butch is nothing like Mack Brown.

Everyone in the nation can see it's over with Butch...

Let it go.

OP....you should compare Butch Jones and Ron Zook. Recruited at an elite level and never competed at an elite level. It wasn't acceptable for them EVER...why should it be for us?

The only coach on your list who had a comparable record was Beamer. Brown and Carroll were churning out multiple double-digit wins by the fifth year.

IMO, the most comparable situations would be Richt at Ga and Spurrier at Fl. Both were off to the races by their second year.

Butch's best year was his third, and it is looking more and more likely that will be his peak.

If you're relying on the law of averages for Jones to bring us the title, you might be waiting for the rest of your life. Elite teams have bad games. Even the likes of OSU, Bama, Clemson, etc. The difference is, those teams almost always pull away late or after the half and win like they should. What I saw Saturday solidified my opinion that Jones will never even win the East. You can't win the SEC if you are struggling in year 5 versus one of the worst teams in the country.

1. Fulmer was obviously trending down. It was getting painful by the end. The fluky 2007 season does not mean he should have been kept longer. We were simply lucky to beat Vandy, Kentucky, and South Carolina.
2. Mack Brown didnÂ’t take 12 years to win a national title at Texas.
3. The numbers you listed donÂ’t make Butch look good. You have to look at really weak programs to compare (pre-Beamer VT, Mississippi State).

Tennessee's program dominance and its historical nostalgia really hasn't been the same in the past 40 years. One national championship since '77 and five conference championships (3 under majors, 2 under fulmer). Also, 1989 was a three way tie for the conference championship, which is now impossible under the current format.

Most ALL TIME SEC championships:
Alabama=26
Tennessee=13
UGA=12
LSU=11
Florida=9 (one vacated)
Auburn=8

Since Johnny Majors was hired in 1977 (40 years ago):
Bama=12
Florida=9 (one vacated)
Auburn=7
LSU=6
UGA tied with Tennessee=5

In the past 40 years, there's been 5 coaches at UT. I wanted to compare their first five years to Jones.

First 5 years of each coach:
Majors: 29-27-1 (1-1 in bowls)
Fulmer (full tenure started in 93): 49-11-1(3-2)
kiffin: 7-6 (0-1)
dooley: 15-21 (0-1)
jones: 33-22 (3-0)

In the past 40 years of Tennessee football, CBJ has had the best w/l record during his first five years of all coaches except for Fulmer. Fulmer had an unbelievable start and he won the SEC but it took four years to do so. It took Majors eight years to win the SEC (and he lost to Florida that year as well).

We've been mediocre for quite some time. One out of our past five coaches won the SEC before year eight at the helm.

I wouldn't put Butch in the same category as Brown or Beamer. Brown won Championships and Beamer put VA Tech on the map. Butch can't even win a bad SEC East. I would put Butch in the Strong,Sumlin,Graham,Rich Rod category.

Was anyone confident that Fulmer could deliver a national title in 1998? He had Manning 4 years and never beat Florida. Without Manning the next he wins a Natty.

Lol, you really want to compare Fulmer's performance as a coach leading up to the natty to Butch's over the last 4 years?

Contrast the state of the SECe in the last 5 years, vs the previous 20, and tell me that Butch hasn't had the easiest path to a division title.
