Somebody throw this in a spreadsheet and make a nice graph. :)

Here's what I instantly see from that data ...

Boy, that run from 75-84, whew! That's when I cut my teeth on UT football. No wonder I couldn't understand firing Fulmer. LOL.

Battle did something nobody else in that period was capable of. Taking a top program and leaving it in the gutter.

Where O where did the fanbase come up with the patience to let Johnny Majors succeed?

Jones is the ONLY coach in the period who "quickly" brought us out of the cesspool and into respectability.

My impression is that from 1989 to 2007 we were ranked in the final poll 16 of 19 years. The best streach was from 1989 to 1999 where we were ranked every year in the final poll. That is why most of the younger generation doesn't give CBJ credit for what he has done. Some of us older guys remember the tough times in the 70's and think that CBJ has done a good enough job to warrant another few years to see if he can put us in championship contention every year. One thing is for sure if he doesn't get us there, he has definitely set the table for the next coach.

That Majors was still around after no Top 25 for 8 straight years. Think administration/fans today would have that kind of patience?

No way...Jones puts us back in the rankings as fast as he did. Coming from absolute gutter trash of a program from Dooley...and we have idiots who want him gone.
Just over a couple games...when he broke how many losing streaks..not to mention UF.

I am amazed the guy has not left..

And if people here think any decent coach would want to be at UT...they must be smoking the good stuff..just sayin

Not a chance. And if he had not been a favorite son returning home to his alma mater, the administration and fans would've run his arse off after 4 years, and rightfully so.....early part of Majors' tenure here was bad, really bad.

That's true in a lot of ways. I'm in my 40's and didn't even get into UT football until early 90's and didn't claim UT as my team until late 90's so.... tv had a lot to do with all this. Everything changed after tv.

Your wish is my command, LF. :)

Final rankings only; didn't include pre-season.

Sadly, what it mostly shows is empty space, outside of the Majors + Fulmer years and the early half of Battle.

But Butch is getting us back into the national conversation again. Here's hoping this year we end up significantly higher than #22.

Go Vols!

Keep in mind the polls back then were Top 20 polls, not Top 25 like we have today.

Johnny Majors as a college player was basically the Peyton Manning of his era. I imagine if we brought in Peyton today as a HC, especially if he had a proven track record, the fanbase would have alot more patience than they would with any outsider.

I don't think we're "in the national conversation" JP, at least not for our on-field play. Being ranked #22-25 or so is being beyond an afterthought. Honestly, we're barely in the SECe division conversational as being picked to finish 3rd behind Georgia and Florida. Being ranked is certainly better than not being ranked, is way better than the Dooley years, no doubt. But as Jones himself likes to say, "we're nowhere where we wanna (or need to) be".

Here's definitely hoping we end up significantly higher than #22

"Getting," not "got," KB. Getting there. :)

And anyway, the national conversation involves more than the playoffs. Did you know that ESPN has a rule of thumb for its sports writers and bloggers on its college football web page? Top 25 teams get regular write-ups, teams outside the Top 25 only if it's really earth-shaking news. Also, the writers for each Power 5 conference are required to churn out articles on Top 25 teams from the league they cover every so often; they're allowed to pretty much ignore teams outside the poll, unless they really just want to cover something.

So, yeah, Getting there. :)
