All of the offensive linemen who had been held out the past week were back at practice today. Trey Smith, Brett Kendrick, and Marcus Tatum were all out on the field on Friday, as well as Josh Smith at receiver.
Ty Chandler has a good burst. We still haven’t seen that in game-like situations, but just from what I’ve been able to gather from drills, he has the potential to be an explosive athlete for Tennessee.

The first three drives near the goal line were orchestrated by Quinten Dormady. The first offensive play resulted in a touchdown pass from Dormady to sophomore Brandon Johnson in the back of the end zone. Johnson made a solid grab for the score. The next two drives ended in victories for the defense as the defensive line got pressure off the end on the second play to force an incompletion, and the third drive ended with more pressure as Dormady moved out of the pocket and couldn’t find an open receiver, tossing it into the end zone but falling incomplete.

The next two drives were led by freshman quarterback Will McBride, and neither of those possessions ended in points for the offense. McBride’s first pass was on the money, but freshman safety Theo Jackson made an exceptional play to break up the pass and prevent a score. The next drive saw the defense get pressure and force a bad pass by McBride that was almost intercepted by a defensive lineman.

The Vols did some 11-on-11 red zone work, and the defense dominated the period. After struggling with situational football a year ago (Vols were third-worst in the SEC), the defense won four of five reps. Wideout Brandon Johnson ran a nice sprint out for a touchdown from Quinten Dormady, beating Rashaan Gaulden on the play, but otherwise, the defense didn't allow another single reception. Freshman defensive back Theo Jackson, who continues to garner more and more reps, made a nice pass breakup against tight end Eli Wolf, while Justin Martin brilliantly defended a fade to Johnson. Going against a hodgepodge offensive line, the defensive line controlled the trenches, especially the defensive tackles. Bob Shoop also dialed up a couple linebacker blitzes, too.

On the final play off the period, quarterback Will McBride was pressured by Kyle Phillips and fumbled/toss an incomplete pass, with Alexis Johnson nearly making a diving interception.

With Mosley limited, fifth-year transfer Shaq Wiggins saw reps with the 1s at corner.

Based off what we saw today it looks like Nigel Warrior and Micah Abernathy are getting a lot of first team work together with Todd Kelly Jr. getting some second team reps alongside Theo Jackson.

Shaq Wiggins currently looks to be getting most of the work at first team corner opposite Justin Martin.

Quinten Dormady had a nice throw on the run and hooked up with Brandon Johnson in the back corner of the endzone during a two-point conversion

Brett Kendrick, Marcus Tatum and Trey Smith were back at practice. Smith was in a green, non-contact jersey

Freshman receiver Jacquez Jones was working as a kick returner

The defense was able to shut out the offense after the Dormady-Johnson score in the two-point conversion drill

In seeing some defensive back work, I continue to be impressed with the freshmen safeties Theo Jackson and Maleik Gray. Both have good size already and have shown good athleticism. The coaches seem to be really high, though, on Jackson.

The highlight for the offense was Quinten Dormady throwing a strike on the run to a well-covered Brandon Johnson in the back of the end zone, but the defense responded.

Dormady was hurried into an incompletion on the second rep, and linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. picked up the timely pressure to force another Dormady incompletion on the third rep.

Freshman safety Theo Jackson had great coverage and broke up a pass intended for tight end Eli Wolf in the end zone, and the defense pressured freshman quarterback Will McBride into double-clutching his throw with big defensive tackle Alexis Johnson laying out in an attempt for a diving interception.

The battle for Tennessee’s first-team weakside linebacker spot is back in earnest now that sophomore Quart'e Sapp is back in his regular jersey.

Sapp spent the first nine practices in a green, limited-contact jersey after coming back from a second significant injury in the past two seasons, but he (apparently) was fully cleared for Friday’s workout.

It’s still probably safe to speculate that senior Cortez McDowell — who has a fantastic offseason — is still the clubhouse leader for the starting Will linebacker spot, but a healthy Sapp is always going to be a factor.

Senior Coleman Thomas and redshirt freshmen Ryan Johnson and Devante Brooks continued to get work at center early in Friday's practice, and Johnson and freshman Riley Locklear continue to get work at guard as well.

The back-and-forth battle at left guard between Venzell Boulware and Jack Jones remains ongoing.

Drew Richmond remains locked into the left tackle spot, but Kendrick got some work at both right and left tackle on Friday.

In one hand you have the talking heads trying stir up the VOLS faithful because Butch has cut them out of the loop.

In the other hand you have what's in front of your eyes.

Go VOLS.

Go VOLS.

That is the best quote and best description of all this mess and misinformation by the butt hurt media of the past week.

The O Line is supposed to be our strength this year I keep hearing. That is concerning to me. I just saw them get pushed around too many times last year. Hopefully, the rock has made them boys stronger.

Honestly looks like the guys came out a lazy and the coaches had to "refocus them" which is fine.

Here comes the NEXT freshman Jackson. We are going to be playing a LOT of freshmen this year guys and Butch is not afraid of it. He is just flat out saying this is who we are.

Defense should be ahead at this point in practice, the question is, how far ahead. Hopefully being a new O.C., may play a part into it too and just trying to get basics down.

Stop listening to those people. Bad players don't suddenly get better because they are a year older. We are the least talented on team team at offensive line.

The strength of this team is in the front 7. Defensive line and linebackers. That is why I expect us to have a top 10 defense nationally and the #1 or #2 defense in the SEC.

Also good to see the coaches not afraid to run Micah Abernathy and Nigel Warrior with the 1st team defense. TKjr shouldn't just get a starting spot because of seniority. He should earn it.

I look forward to Nigel Warrior and Micah Abernathy playing a lot of snaps together at safety because they are IMO our 2 most talented players at safety.

I don't give a flip what our strength is if we don't have an Oline we are going NOWHERE. ZERO. GOOSE EGG.

We are supposed to have a two deep of experienced upper classmen at Oline, which is supposed to make them one of the best, if not the best in the SEC.... No OLINE.... NO season. Period. We go as far as the Oline takes us this year... NO FURTHER. It better be a strength.

Yes they do. It may take being a year older for the scheme to click or even for the game to slow down for them no matter what position.
