I, for one, am glad we are under the radar this year. We don't need hype. We need a huge chip on our shoulder going into the season. There should be no big orange hype unless we comeback from the sewer, err, I mean swamp, with a win. And, as much as I'm one of the sunshine pumpers, I mean comeback with a win where we played well, not where something hokey happened and we happened to leave with a W. Don't get me wrong, a W is a W and we all learned in 98 that you do need luck. But this early, and I will hold my hype, (not my hope or fandom), until after that game where we looked like we were prepared, and play like we were prepared. This season has a lot of question marks and I really don't think anyone will know how we'll truly look until the UF game. So let's get to the swamp 2-0, and play like were 12-0, and come back 3-0.

What in the world does chp on the shoulder mean? All you need to do is just DO. Just do your job and get it done. Just DO.

It's a damned shame that top 20 is celebration worthy. Top 10 should be the expectation. Participation trophies are for losers.

OP I think you made some really solid points, here. I agree that top 20 isn't something to be proud of and we can all agree that preseason rankings are meaningless. I hope that the guys on this team learned some lessons last year about hype and about how quickly a couple of losses can change everything.

Starting out 5-0 and having a solid spot inside the top 10, especially the way we did it by coming from behind in every game, made the big picture look like a dream season. Anyone who watched our highlights and looked at our stats and our 5-0 record would have thought we were the most exciting team in the country. Yet, anyone who watched every game we played would have known that we were also the most frustrating team in the country. Being down against teams like Appy State, VT and Ohio was embarrassing, and we certainly didn't play like a top 10 team on defense. Last year we had some incredible athletes step up in big time situations and it enabled us to get away with a poor game plan and execution.

My hope is that the guys from that team will use the roller coaster that was the first 5 games as a learning experience. Without even bringing up SC or Vandy, we didn't play like a top 10 football team in most of our biggest wins.

Coming in under the radar can inspire a team, and put a chip on our shoulder. Let's hope that is the case. I know we can turn some heads this year if we play the way we are capable of.

Grant Ramey of 247 sports today regurgitated the Fremeau Efficiency Index preseason ranking for Tennessee this year. The FEI has Tennessee at #25.

This is Grant's article:

Reporters are lazy so I'll do the work to answer the question on your mind.

This is how the FEI ranked the SEC teams in the preseason last year and how the FEI ranked the SEC teams at the end of the season and the difference.

AL #1, #1, =0
LSU #2, #8, -6
GA #6, #54, -48
OM #8, #47, -39
TN #10, #20, -10
ARK #18, #58, -40
MSU #23, #69, -46
A&M #24, #31, -7
AUB #28, #14, +14
MO #31, #81, -50
FL #36, #21, +15
SC #55, #88, -33
VD #78, #55, +23
KY #90, #78, +12

Preseason 2016

I guess you have to play the games after all.

This makes no sense. They have Auburn ranked higher than Clemson yet predicts that Clemson will beat Auburn? HUH?

In general, you're correct, but every team has ebbs and flows year to year, and with losses we had from last year, I think this is a show of respect from our past 2-3 years of consistency in wins (though we all know should be more).

To me, UT resembles the SEC E as a whole...alot of unknowns. Think UF is in dangerous territory. Granted, they stumbled into SEC E championship last two years, which I wish UT could say. But, they lost a TON on D, and just lost their best returning player on D to injury, and another contributor to transfer. Offense hasn't proven to be stellar. UGA has returning D, but losses on OL and questions in general on offense puts the big three in a big pile of "who knows"...though on paper, I'd probably put us about where we are rated, with real potential for big upside.
