Before walking off with what appeared to be a minor ankle injury, John Kelly was diligently coaching the four walk-on tailbacks for much of practice.
Walt Wells (checkout the video) was none-to pleased with the OL effort Thursday. With a lot of young guys getting reps, Wells was coaching the group hard, trying to get great reps from guys like Ryan Johnson, Riley Locklear and Trey Smith.
There were a ton of drops during the routes on air period. Latrell Williams especially struggled, drawing some faint criticism from Jones. Tyler Byrd did look really good in the drill, though. Brandon Johnson did some light work during the drill, even slipping but recovering for a catch on a deep out. Jeff George and others also slipped a couple times.
simontonQuarterbacks were OK on Thursday, but it certainly wasn't their sharpest performance. JG had some accuracy issues early before finding his rhythm. They focused on a lot of roll-outs and crossing routes initially before throwing a lot of deep corners and outs to end the session.
As usual, we saw a lot of special teams work, today that focused on kickoff return. Early signs indicate that the four guys getting the longest at kickoff return duties (with Evan Berry sidelined) are Tyler Byrd, Marquez Callaway, Latrell Williams and Nigel Warrior.
On defense, early enrollee Deandre Johnson has had his black stripe removed, joining classmate Trey Smith in that particular club. Johnson continues to generate some solid buzz in camp
rob lewisOne thing thats standing out this spring, and it could be a reflection of finally having a quarterback coach, is that the QBs footwork is getting a ton of attention from Mike Canales. Not that it was ignored in the past but its something Canales really seems to put a great deal of emphasis on.
The quarterbacks were generally on target in this period, but it was the receivers that struggled in the drill. There were several dropped passes on very catchable balls. That drew the ire of Butch Jones as he oversaw the drill. Everybody from veteran Jauan Jennings to several of the younger players let the ball hit the ground at some point. Jones made several receivers redo routes as he looked for more consistency out of that drill.
daniel lewisO-line thoughts: I spent one full period watching Walt Wells working with the offensive line. Its certainly a new feel with that unit as its moved from a three-headed coaching approach (Don Mahoney, Mike DeBord and Wells) to Wells now being the only voice within that group.
Wells is fiery to say the least. A few linemen felt his wrath when he realized that not every player had gone through the drill the number times that hed asked. When there was some confusion in that area, he told them hed check the tape on it and let them hear about it after practice.
r. potkeyThe quarterbacks worked on rolls out, seam routes and deep balls during a brief window open the media. Redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano struggled with consistency in the few throws he made during the session.
This was by far the most secure practice of spring with local law enforcement officials lining the far sideline. Its the annual tradition of UT coach Butch Jones inviting them to practice to watch and interact with players.
Austin Smith said he's down from about 260 pounds to around 235
