18. Tennessee

Industry sources had mixed feelings about Tennessee — which, really, is fairly typical of Tennessee.

One agent wanted to see how the AD search concluded, with there being some concern that candidates outside the university’s “family” were not being fairly considered. The name 247Sports heard Thursday was Danny Morrison, the former Carolina Panthers president who was previously the AD at TCU and the Southern Conference commissioner.

Facilities are top-rate, especially after upgrades to the athletic dining room and training areas, as well as the coaches’ offices. But the question here remains about the university’s upper leadership, even above the AD office.

Can the board assume a fair role in affairs, allowing the athletic department and football building the chance to operate in some autonomous peace? Perhaps the new chancellor, Beverly Davenport, will dictate a new direction. This job has potential but enough static to hold it down.

247Sports ranks Power 5 college coaching jobs: Nos. 25-16

"The off-campus stadium, 30-plus minutes from campus, is always a hot-button topic, but Hard Rock Stadium has seen significant upgrades to offset some of the geographic angst."

They built a Sonic Drive-In in the Wal-Mart parking lot across the street from the stadium. Talk about upgrades baby!!!!! :pepper:

With the Title IX and a decline in athletics success there is a spotlight to see how and who brings UT "Back". CBJ has done the heavy lifting, let him finish the job and then shake his hand with a smile.

We're were are because of the AD situation. And to add salt to the wound, look at how our arguably worst enemy conducted their search. One AD (Battle) doesn't even announce that he's leaving and they hold a presser and announce the new AD (Byrne). All done behind the scene. Bama was just like UT in the sense they kept the AD position "In The Family". But, they found theirs outside.

We could be top tier if the powers that be would get it together.

Michigan State and UCLA above Tennessee? What a joke. When are people going to learn that UCLA is never, ever going to get it together?

I can't see FL being #2 with GA,AL, and TX behind them. FL isn't even the best scholly in their state. Their Facilities aren't top notch, the state is good for recruiting but TX/GA are more fertile.

I feel that I'd have an easier time selling Florida as a head coach/recruiter than Florida State; they have exponentially greater revenue and fan support than FSU and play in a significantly more stable conference with a pretty solid television deal. Though both states have a lot of schools, I feel that it's easier to divvy up recruits amongst Florida/FSU and a distant Miami than Texas/A&M/myriad solid P5 schools and some burgeoning G5 options.

As for Georgia, I don't want to coach somewhere that a track record like that of Mark Richt gets you canned. Florida also has lofty expectations, for sure, but I think you'd be able to ride consistent 8 and 9 win seasons with occasional 10 and 11 win breakouts much more easily than a Bulldogs fanbase/administration frothing at the mouth for a national title.

These 'rankings' are bit ridiculous. They're meant to get get clicks to stimulate opinions and disagreements. That being said, I'll take the bait. The rankings fluctuate. Before AL hired Saban, AL was way down the list. All programs ebb and flow. TN has been a mess for too long thanks to our leadership. But don't ever forget we are a TOP 10 national program, and most importantly our expectations should expect comparable results year in year out.

Define "finish the job"

FINISH each season in the top 10 consistently. Winning the east, SEC, getting into the playoffs and winning the NC are all on the table each year if you're a team that virtually always finishes ranked #10 at worst.
