• Tennessee returns 17 starters on offense (9) and defense (8), including the Vols’ four team captains - Joshua Dobbs, Alvin Kamara, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Cameron Sutton.

• At the 2016 Orange and White Game, head coach Butch Jones named UT’s first permanent captains since 2011.

Tennessee and Appalachian State have never played each other. UT’s football program dates back to 1891 and Appalachian State’s dates back to 1928.

• Entering his fourth season as UT’s head coach, Jones is 11-3 against non-conference opponents.

UT opens its season on Thursday for the rst time since the then-No. 11 Vols took a 28-11 victory over Louisville on Sept. 5, 1991.

Tennessee is 25-20-7 all-time in Thursday games and last played on a Thursday on Dec. 30, 2010, in a 30- 27, 2OT loss to North Carolina in the Music City Bowl.

UT’s last regular-season Thursday game was a 41-3 win over Ole Miss on Oct. 3, 1996 in Memphis. The Vols were ranked No. 9 in that game as well.

UT has won seven-straight season openers and
19 of its last 21. Tennessee took a 59-30 win over Bowling Green on Sept. 5, 2015, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

The Vols have won 21 consecutive season openers played in Tennessee, dating to 1986.

Tennessee is No. 9 in the Preseason Associated Press Top 25 Poll, which was released on Aug. 21. The Vols were ranked No. 10 in the Preseason Amway Coaches Poll on Aug. 4

UT was last ranked in the top 10 on Oct. 29, 2006, when the Vols were 7-1 and No. 8 in both polls entering Week 10.

App State went 11-2 in 2015--its second season as an FBS member--and capped the year with a 31-29 win over Ohio in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. The Mountaineers is 17-2 over their last 19 games and 13-1 in Sun Belt play since the middle of the 2014 season--their first at the FBS level.

Like the Vols, App State is returning 17 starters from last season and is the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference. Their roster boasts both of the Sun Belt's preseason players of the year with running back Marcus Cox and linebacker John Law earning the honors.

Tennessee is 8-0 all-time against current members of the Sun Belt Conference.

If we take the ball first and the opportunity is given does Evan Berry take the opening kick of the season for 6? What a way to start that would be.

Over/under we score a special teams TD?

That's tough. Opportunities will be limited I do believe, as far as the kickoff returns go. I'd say under just because I don't think they'll kick to Sutton or Kamara, whoever is back there on punt returns.
