A lot of people abandoned ship after Brandon Wilds broke free on a 70-yard run to make it 42-28 with about 5 minutes to go. I was one of them.
(*this is probably gonna get me a coupla "cool story bro"comments, but I wanted to share it.*)
I was almost one of those that left. IIRC, it was around 0430-0500 local when the fourth quarter started (yep, I haven't missed a game since being in Germany) and my faith in the Vols' ability to make the big comeback had started to wane just a little bit. About the time Wilds broke that big run, I had the remote in my hand and was about to shut the TV off......but something stopped me.
I know I've told this story before, but I'mma do it again. My "Grandma Pat" (RIP sweet lady, I still miss you), a lifelong resident of Maryville, Tennessee and a PROUD graduate of the University of Tennessee is the reason that I am a Vol fan today. Not gonna go into the full backstory, but she took me to Neyland Stadium on 14 September, 1991 to watch the Vols play UCLA.....and my blood's been Orange ever since. That having been said.......
So I'm sitting there on the couch, remote in hand, about to shut the TV down because let's face it, we're down 14 with less than 5 minutes to go, I'm of the mindset (and I'm not the only one, I guarantee ya) that this game's over, the Vols have fallen to the chickens, yada yada blah blah blah. My thumb hovers over the power button, and I swear to y'all that I heard Grandma Pat tell me "this ain't over yet" so I set the remote back down. Glad I did, too, that was quite possibly one of the best comebacks I'll ever see. Just wanted to share that with y'all.
