Yep, lots of reasons to be excited about this kid.
Second-Year Surge: Tennessee Vols football's Cortez McDowell
McDowell in 2014 was very similar to Jalen Reeves-Maybin in 2013. Both signed with Tennessee as big safeties and were quickly converted to undersized,
fast outside linebackers. Both were demons on special teams in games while learning the ropes on defense in practice. The biggest differences were the
jersey numbers and the dreadlocks flowing out the back of Reeves-Maybins helmet.
Players excelling on special teams isnt always an indicator that theyll be excellent defensive players, but more often than not that seems to the case. When
a young player flies down the field and almost always ends up near the ball on special teams, it usually means hes a good athlete with good football instincts
and a good motor. Thats the foundation on which most good defenders are built.
