At 17.6% last year, the Vols were 31st nationally but just 9th in the SEC. Would like to see us get up to about 19.5% this year, which we're fully capable of doing.

The most exciting defenses to watch are the ones that specialize in raising hell. We have a statistic to tell us which teams are the best at this kind of specialization. It's appropriately named havoc rate, and just as it sounds, it determines how often a defense wreaks havoc on opposing offenses.

Havoc rate measures the percentage of plays that end in a tackle for loss (including sacks), forced fumble, or tipped/intercepted pass....

The national average was 15.8 percent for the 2014 season...

Thanks for the post. I expect us to climb into the teens at least. Was pleasantly surprised at how well Jancek's D got after it last season. With the addition of Tuttle, Mac, and Kyle, plus our secondary, I think we could see some seriously disruptive play this season.

Nice addition to the conversation, Little Vol. Can you imagine DCs sweating bullets while scheming to stop the inside/outside rush with Barnett, Maggitt, Vereen and possibly the most fearsome pure rusher in the group, Chris Weatherd...all of them rotating in 'n out with Phillips and Butcher quickly picking up on the nuances of SEC football. What's going to pop up the middle with K-Mac and Shy and O'Brien and Vickers and Williams pushing those dawgs and gayduhs, et al, into gaps for our boys to punish...also considering Quay Picou is supposed to be a vicious middle stuffer? There's too much talent vying for Mike and with Bynum, Bryant, Kirkland, Jr. (heir apparent...no doubt) holding the middle defensive qb spot. Bates needs to stay outside...his speed makes him a special beast there, and with JRM and the aforementioned Weatherd and Maggitt sometimes playing one LB spot or the other, no worries, bro. Our safeties and corners are as solid as anyone's---ANYONES. I doubt we'll be sweating 3rd and 4th downs like we used to. I'm wondering what sort of uber-pass rush schemes and lineups Jancek will throw at the enemy. Three or four of these rush specialists at one time could be mega-devastating! Add safeties TKJ, Berry, McNeil and randolph on safety blitzes. Yeowch! Eh, is summer over yet?

Haha. I have come to a point in life where I don't want time to go by too fast. But man im excited to see team 119!

This defense will dominate Oklahoma. That's when everyone in the country will take notice, that things can and indeed do change.

There's more than a few future NFL guys on this defense imo

I expect the defense to continue to progress, but they really need a playmaker to emerge at the middle linebacker position. Bates would be a likely canadiate.

As was mentioned above, I hope Bates stays outside and Kirkland is everything he's anticipated to be. I agree with you though, MLB is key.

It's Kirkland, already a done deal. Bates will go back outside once Kirkland gets his SEC legs under him.

I think Chris Weatherd is gonna have a big year. He got on the field on athletic ability alone last season, and showed glimpses of his ability. I believe with a year in the system under his belt he will wreak havoc on opposing qbs in 3rd and long situations.

As much talent as we have on offense, I think I will be even more excited to watch our defense play. We are stacked. Its going to be a fun year of football.

With solid speed and coverage in the back, as long as our DTs and MLB have improved our up the gut run stop ability our pass rush should be similar to the stats and productivity Mizzou has had the last couple of years.

Having Kelly and Berry to rotate at safety, Sutton and the transfer juco corners experience and skills will truly help the front seven more than anything. Just being able to send your ends and or linebackers knowing your coverage has your back opens up so many options for a D
