I heard Doug Matthews talking about this topic over the weekend. His top five were:

Darren Kirkland
Kyle Phillips
Kahlil McKenzie
Justin Martin
Tommy Townsend

Another interesting point to consider is how many freshman to you think will start/play this season compared to last year? As the talent level and depth grows, it stands to reason that fewer and fewer of the incoming guys will be asked to contribute right away. That's where you hope to get to as a program.

good point. the team we had in the spring will look nothing like the one we have in the fall. Its basically a completely diff team considering all the injuries/newcomers. I think maybe a couple freshman will play but i think several will help on Special Teams.

I like his list, Freak, but would squeeze in another: Drew Richmond.

Having said that, I think maybe half of them won't even play this year. Think we're going to see a lot more red-shirts among freshmen than we did last year. Of the 22 non-EE incoming freshmen, I'd bet well over half will redshirt.

I would think Tuttle will factor into the rotation at DT as well.

Absolutely. I think so too. He's not on the list since he's already here, though. Actually, I think being here this spring, and the reps he got, was huge for him.

Yes, I agree but I'm not sure how you leave Richmond off the list.

Darren Kirkland
Kyle Phillips
Kahlil McKenzie
Justin Martin

Martin isnt a freshman but is a newcomer. Same with RDA who will be on the field somewhere whether at Slot/RB/ or return.

It really sounds to me like the coaches are really expecting Martin to come in and contribute right away. I think he has three years left to play.

yeh i think it will be hard to keep a kid that talented off the field. So much athleticism, speed and length at 6'2

Martin will come in and play in some fashion, the kid is too good not to be a backup early starter later

Hope Josh Dobbs can stay healthy so Jennings and Jones can redshirt. We are stacked at DE with Butcher and Taylor redshirting.

While we're on this subject, what do you guys think will be Richmond's immediate impact, if any? I saw a BR article from Brad Shepard the other day, and he believes Richmond could crack the rotation immediately.

Tennessee Football: Summer Enrollees Who Could Make an Immediate Impact | Bleacher Report

Drew Richmond, 6'5", 310-Pound Offensive Tackle

The biggest recruiting win for Jones in the last cycle may have come with the 11th-hour flip of Memphis offensive tackle Richmond from Ole Miss.

Not only did getting Richmond to change his mind represent yet another example of Jones keeping the best players within state boundaries, it also gave UT a major prospect at a major position of need.

Jones went into one of the most difficult recruiting battlegrounds in the Southeast and won a key battle, an aspect that wasn't overlooked during his national signing day celebration.

The Vols need impact offensive tackles, and while there were a couple of good prospects already pledged in last year's class, there wasn't an elite player. Richmond gave them that as the nation's third-ranked tackle.

Though Kendrick enjoyed a stellar spring to take a commanding lead as the right tackle starter opposite senior Kyler Kerbyson, Richmond will throw a 310-pound hat into the ring once he arrives on campus. He's athletic, and he is exceptional at the point of attack.

There's no doubt where the Memphis University School standout expects to fit into UT's offensive plan next season.

"I plan on being a starter," he told VolQuest.com's John Brice at the two-minute, 40-second mark of a video filmed this week. "That's all I can say."

That's not easy at the position where he plays; one of the toughest spots in all of college football to crack the starting rotation as a first-year player. The Vols have proven in recent years with Ja'Wuan James, Tiny Richardson and Coleman Thomas that they aren't shy in starting youngsters.

Is Richmond next on the list? He's the same kind of star prospect that James and Richardson were. He appears primed to have a big career in Knoxville, and that may be spent as a wire-to-wire starter.

Is Preston Williams here yet??

.

That's definitely a player I have my eye on. He seems to understand route concepts so well at such a young stage of his career. He just has a great feel on how to set up defenders.

Interested in Richmond and Phillips, as well.

I think these three as well as probably one of the QBs may not be able to redshirt...especially Sapp with our lack of depth at LB and Hall especially if he is good off his injury we will need as many Olinemen as we can get to keep Dobbs upright and healthy.

You really think Boulware redshirts? I think that's a good list except I think Venzell and Abernathy will play...and maybe Jennings.

I think Kirkland and McKenzie are starters, and Richmond will crack the lineup by mid season. Going to be hard to keep Williams off the field
if he's 100%.

...especially Sapp with our lack of depth at LB .

We've got all kinds of LB depth, we just don't have experienced depth. We're about to find out which of these young talented LB prospects will rise to the top! Seriously doubt Sapp can get any meaningful playing time outside of special teams play.

Of course we have kahlil, Kirkland, Martin, and Richmond... But as a sleeper I think Abernathy is going to make an impact somewhere. I think if nothing else, he will be a beast on special teams. I'm really excited about this kid as a future impact player in the secondary.
