Patrick Brown: Tennessee practiced in shells today, but it looked like #Vols got Alvin Kamara (thigh bruise) and Emmanuel Moseley (mono) back.

Speaking of returns, Alvin Kamara was back in action for Tennessee after missing all three sessions last week. The junior college tailback who signed and enrolled earlier this year was not among the Vols' non-contact, green-jersey contingent that included Alton 'Pig' Howard, Jalen Hurd and Marquez North. Freshman defensive end Andrew Butcher also was a full return to practice after missing some time with concussion-like symptoms. Emmanuel Moseley also returned for some work after missing several practices with mono.

Tennessee hopped into early one-on-one battles, with Jones bellowing on the microphone that Von Pearson had requested a battle with Cam Sutton. With Josh Dobbs throwing into the back, right corner of the end zone, Pearson was able to leap above Sutton's coverage and was ruled in bounds for the score.

In battles between front-line players, freshman Chance Hall battled Shy Tuttle and earned at worst a stalemate and might have slightly edged Tuttle. Dontavius Blair appeared to top Dimarya Mixon, forcing Mixon backfield and behind the quarterback. Blair later seemed to have some quality reps as linemen worked on the defensive field as well.

Rucker's Fast Five
1. Vols practiced in shorts.
2. Kamara and Moseley back.
3. Maggitt and Kirkland were back on the field, with no contact obviously.
4. No Coleman Thomas still and Reeves-Maybin was late, likely due to class obligations.
5. HIGHLIGHTS. Rising sophomore wide receiver Josh Malone made a couple of nice plays during a seven-on-seven pass skeleton period that was open for reporters to watch but not photograph. Malone made a catch in closed quarters on the sideline despite being interfered with by rising junior cornerback Malik Foreman — who was flagged at least one other time for being a bit too physical out on the perimeter. Moseley was flagged for holding, as well, but aside from that the defense probably got the better of the offense overall. But it wasn’t one-way traffic. Malone and some others made a couple of nice plays, but rising senior wide receiver Pig Howard (who’s still in a green, limited-contact jersey with bruised ribs) didn’t look like himself for a second consecutive practice. Those bruised ribs seem to be bothering him a bit. If it was a bit too physical during the pass-skeleton period, there might have been a reason for that. Jones started practice by putting his players through one-on-one drills in front of all their teammates, and he told rising junior star cornerback Cameron Sutton that the offense was coming after him “all day.” Rising senior wide receiver Von Pearson opened that period by beating Sutton for a touchdown, for what it’s worth.

DORMADY: We did a good job of correcting mental errors. I am getting more and more comfortable each and every day. http://t.co/4QNoCj8D2f

JONES: First shells practice for this football team, our guys did a good job of handling that.
JONES: @EMoseley_4 is back. He adds to that competitive structure that we talk about so it's great to have him back in practice.
JONES: @DreadHead_Vick (Kendal Vickers) is an inside player for us. He's handled that move extremely well. He's becoming more comfortable in that role.
JONES: We pick our spots in practice when balancing reps for our veteran players and young players.
JONES: It was good to have @A_kamara6 back out there today. He had some valuable repetitions. @MrHurd_1 got some work as well.
JONES: I think the Orange & White game is important for us. It's going to be a great event, but it will be a challenge with our numbers.
JONES: We'll mix some special things into practice on Saturday for Student Appreciation Day. We're very excited about that.
JONES: Our administration had been very supportive of myself and our coaching staff. I'm grateful for them showing that support.
JONES: The safety position has been extremely competitive for us. @aSuperManDoe (Evan Berry) is playing his best football right now.
JONES: When you start to build a program, your younger players learn from your older players.

KNOXVILLE -- Malik Foreman strode onto the football field inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex on Thursday proudly sporting a new fashion accessory as he went to complete his post-practice routine of stretching and recovery.

The rising sophomore cornerback wore around his neck a large metal chain with an orange and white lock featuring Tennessee's "Power T" logo.

Awarded to the "lockdown" defensive back for each practice in spring and during training camp, the creation of position coach Willie Martinez has become an important prize to the players in the Volunteers' secondary.

Every article Rucker writes kills me... Why does he use the adjective "rising" for every player he mentions?

I'm pretty sure 247 has no editors, otherwise redundancies like that would get corrected.

VQ uploaded a video of OL vs DL and Blair looks really good. He could be dominant with sustained effort.

If he does indeed turn the corner, we may be okay

In the video he dominates Butcher and handles Weatherd. Someone on VQ said he can make even Barnett look silly at times but he still struggles with the basics and the playbook.

I really think the coaches are just going to play him no matter what this season. There's no reason not to unless he's just absolutely terrible in game situations.

Not defending the choad, but they arent really seniors or juniors until the fall. So until then, they are rising seniors, etc

Technically, they're not even "rising" until they finish this year's academics. For now, whoever he's calling a "rising senior" is still a junior. And so on. Over the summer they'll be "rising" whatever, and then come start of the new academic year in the fall they'll lose the "rising" qualifier.

But who gives a poop, we know what he means. Whether he says "future senior" or "rising senior" or "current junior" we'll understand. It's not like anyone reading his article doesn't already know that next fall Pig will be a senior, Josh a junior, Jalen a sophomore, and Shy a freshman, anyway. :)
