Linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen has watched with great interest as Kirkland created a presence in the linebacker meeting room. Hes a very mature young man, unlike anybody we have on our team, Thigpen said Thursday. Hes different. Its going to be really interesting to see how he succeeds in the future.
Thigpen offered an example of why he calls Kirkland different. During a recent walk-through session, a veteran player missed a play call. Kirkland let him know about it.
That tells me a lot about his mental makeup, Thigpen said. Hes not sheepish. Hes willing to challenge an older guy on the field.

While he continues to nurse his injury, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound freshman has his nose stuffed deep in the playbook and film room to consume as much information as possible. Hes also been able to participate in practices as an observer, picking up mental cues and signals that would otherwise go unnoticed in the fast pace of a Tennessee practice session.
Really, Im just breaking down the film, being the MIKE (linebacker) that coach Thigpen needs, really trying to lead the defense as best I can from the sidelines, Kirkland said. Im learning the playcalls, learning hand signals, things like that to help me improve.
Hes also been able to attack lower body workouts...while he lets his injured shoulder properly heal.
Ive been killing the lower body for the last two months that Ive been injured, Kirkland said. Ive seen a lot of improvement. Ive gained about 12 or 13 pounds since Ive been here. Its been very successful for me.
Kirkland remembers how to forget
