Police: UT students tried to take home plate from Vanderbilt's Hawkins Field

Two University of Tennessee students were arrested over the weekend after police said they were caught on camera breaking into Hawkins Field at Vanderbilt University and then trying to steal home plate.

Vanderbilt University police noticed the break-in on surveillance cameras around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. When they responded to Hawkins Field, they saw the men crouched down and "tampering with something on the field" near home plate, according to court documents.

Police later identified those men as suspects Forrest Bullen and Austin Shelton, both 21. According to their arrest warrants, Bullen and Shelton both ran for the outfield when police announced themselves.

Bullen eventually stopped and surrendered to police, according to his warrant. Police said Shelton jumped the fence at the edge of the field and kicked at officers as they tried to pull him down. He was taken into custody soon afterward on Vanderbilt Place.

After a search of the field, officers said they found a pair of scissors on the ground near home plate. Part of the turf had been cut up in that area. Police said the vandalism caused more than $10,000 in damage.

Both Bullen and Shelton are students at UT, according to school and public records. Bullen works as an intramural referee, according to the university's recreational sports department. A page listing Shelton as a campus tour guide was taken down from UT's website Monday.

The officers charged both men with attempted theft, evading arrest and trespassing. Shelton was also charged with felony vandalism and resisting arrest.

Bullen and Shelton are expected to face their charges in court in Davidson County on Dec. 16.

Well, that's just what drunken college kids do. It's been done before so what's the problem? Other school's students do this kind of stuff also.

who uses scissors? you deserve to get caught because you brought your mothers shears to the ball field and attempt to steal home plate.

I've always fancied dropping a nice deuce on the 50 at the dud. Doubt anyone would notice or care.

$10,000 damage. :w00t::jpshakehead::think_not::bs:

GO VOLS!

You've assessed the damages and have seen a repair estimate? How much of the turf has to be replaced in order to make it match properly? What were all the damages? Did they break something to get in? How much damage was done there?

Well that's a little bit of a highball estimate on damages is it not?

It's almost like they're trying to trump up the alleged damage. It would be more believable if they'd claimed a "gajillion bazillion dollars" in damage.

They really don't need a home plate most of the Vandy contingency has never even made it to second base.

Yikes Felony!

Friend of mine got charged with a felony when we were at UT.

Incidentally it was at the UT Baseball stadium. Walking back from class he hopped into a golf cart they left out front - with the key still in it - and drove it for a loop around the football practice field. When he came back they called the police and had him arrested for felony theft.
