We got a good look at how the Butch Jones Zone Read Option with an ideal Zone Read QB fares against a good defense that prepares to stop the QB keeper in the zone read. Mizzou took Dobbs out of the game and basically shut down Butch's offense without using any trickery.

Our offense scored 6 point tonight. Granted, Mizzou has a very good defense, but we saw what happens when a good defense prepares to face our offense. Butch's offense is built around a running QB, but is is very limiting in the passing game versus a good team that can stop the QB keeper and the run game. Dobbs carried the ball 17 times tonight and gained 13 yards.

Missouri played a Tampa 2 most of the night, pressed on the corners with their corners sitting on the short routes in the flats, disrupting our passing game, played some man under with their linebackers, taking away intermediate routes over the middle. Their defensive ends contained Dobbs all night long. They never gave up the edge.

You can rightfully point your finger at our OL tonight, but it is not getting any better for another 3 years or so. Who is out there now, will be out there next season too.

We went out and had a lot of success against Bama, once they were up 3-4 TDs on us and against horrible defenses at SC and UK. We all got giddy, but now realize that we are just the best team of the lower tier of SEC teams. There are mid-tier SEC teams and upper-tier teams better than us.

Sure I am proud of how hard our guys battled tonight, but this offense that we run is not likely going to result in any SEC championships, no matter how much talent we accumulate, if we can't score points on good defenses. This is not the MAC or Big East. We faced a fast upper echelon SEC defense tonight and did virtually nothing against it running the zone read offense with a zone read QB specialist at the helm.

I'm gonna withhold judgement until we finally have the combination of a competent dual threat QB and a competent offensive line at the same time.

Last 2 years we have had one without the other

Gotta have an offensive line that knows schemes and has experienced the "options" in a read option, they will get it, next year we will know. Thanks to our seniors, they played hard and never quit, best wishes to them.

We've struggled against teams with decent-good defensive fronts. It isn't rocket science. The oline is the limiting factor of this team and we knew that coming into the season. Scheme is fine.

Think that WR recruits are going to b jumping through hoops to play in an offense where against good defenses, they will be doing mostly bubble screens, watching RBs catching swing passes out of the backfield, and watching tight ends catching wham routes?

Dobbs has been great against some teams that were not preparing for him or a running QB in this offense, or we faced just horrible defenses, like SC and Kentucky. We faced a good defense and really needed an better passing game than the one we offered out there tonight. He is going to have to improve his passing and Butch os going to have to rework his offense in time in order to be successful enough to win championships.

The guys we have now are probably going to be the same guys out there next season.

Because Florida and Auburn winning multiple conference titles the last 10 years using Spread and Shred zone read concepts didn't happen I guess.

There are very few teams that can rush 4 and get pressure consistently. Hopefully we are one of those teams next year with the d-lineman we have coming in

Agree. Hard to judge with this line. Subs of subs and torn ACLs.

Not to beat a dead horse, but this whole team is young and needs experience. They're getting it, it'll get better.

Any offense is hard to run when the defensive line is in the backfield at the mesh point. It was a bad matchup for us tonight.

Alabama has been winning NCs without using the zone read or the spread. Did that happen? FSU won the NC last season without the zone read.

The online will get better with experience and adding depth. Its unfair to use the "this is all you get" attitude because its completely false. With more practice and time in the film room, Dobbs is going to be able to handle the option play better. A few times he left Hurd screwed and had opportunities to drop the ball off when the ends crashed but didn't. He's just inexperienced but will get better.

Yep, this pretty much sums it up. Everyone needs to drink some water, taker an aspirin, and go to bed.

There is one glaring difference between the teams you mentioned and UT.

That's not what the thread is about though. Spread option works just fine when run properly with the right players.

You need a good O Line for both systems. Unfortunately we don't have that. All those teams had/have good O Lines.

Could you please suggest an offensive scheme that works when the whole OL is getting thrown around like ragdolls? Thanks.
