$5.7 million — combined salaries over three years.
$5 million — buyout for termination.
$500,000 — amount UT paid to Louisiana Tech to buy out Dooley's previous contract.
$286,782 — UT's payment to the IRS for withholding taxes on Dooley's contract with Louisiana Tech.
$50,000 — bonus for making the 2010 Music City Bowl.
$100,000 — payment for team's achieving satisfactory academic progress over two years.
That adds up to $11,636,782, or an average of $3,878,927.33 a year.
Think about it. Based on those numbers, Dooley is the sixth-highest paid college football coach in the nation this season. Only Nick Saban ($5.3 million), Mack Brown ($5.25 million), Bob Stoops ($5.05 million), Les Miles ($4.15 million) and Urban Meyer ($4 million) make more in compensation from their schools.

Plus not to make us look crazy by running off another coach.. Which I believe it was just with the last one..

Yeah I believe Butch will have at least 5 years here no matter the record but so much. He'd have to really bomb it one of the years before then to be gone.

Well that little nugget of info just made me hate Mike Hamilton that much more.

People say to lay off Dooley and "the past is the past". But those people dont realize how catastrophic his tenure at UT really was. He is still actively ruining our program.

We overpay indiscriminately. We did with Dooley and we did with Butch. Through recruiting and mending relationships, Butch has already brought far more value than Dooley. Butch wants to be here and he works hard, but he has to win.

It would have been crazy not to fire Dooley. He wasn't just floundering; he was damaging the program. He was clearly a mistake, and while the buyout is costly, cutting our losses was more cost-effective in the long run. We set the program back by not firing him after the 2011 UK game. A lot of the problems and shortcomings we've seen from 2012 until now stem from Dooley's neglect and/or incompetence that last year.

My friend sold ole Hammy a car several years ago. The sticker was 40k. Mike negotiated a purchase price of 75k. Plus he returned it to the dealership 9 months later and paid 50k for them to take it back. He also agreed to buy it for the next person who wanted it.

He's a helluva negotiator.

The real reason is the people in charge at Tennessee knows none of this crap is Butch fault. They are smart enough to know Butch is building this football team back up. If the nega vols had their way he would be gone an we would start over again. Then it be another 4 or 5 years to wait. Butch going to get us back on top. A lot of you are going to look real bad when he gets another year or two of his players in here. Then we will be winning the SEC east. Good grief we gave Dooley 4 years. And some of you are crying about Butch and it is his second year. No coach in America could done a better job with what Dooley left.

It's totally fine for Obama to blame Bush for things 8+ years after the fact. But around here at VN, it's not okay to blame Dooley for something that happened 2-3 years ago.

Butch and his crew have to be given 5 years. After 5 years, if the program is not successful, it will be easier to get a coaches interested in the program.

He won't get five years without clear progress, and that means winning in the SEC. He gets three years, and he'll have to earn the next two. That's fair. If he isn't winning in 2015 with two Top 10 recruiting classes on the field, then we need to re-evaluate whether he's the best fit for the program. Three years in, the signs will be there... or not.
