The statuses of a few of the Vols’ other recently injured players remain a bit more uncertain.

Jones said Monday that freshman tight ends Ethan Wolf and Daniel Helm have recovered from the injuries they suffered over the past few weeks, but he won’t know more until “later in the week” about sophomore wide receiver Josh Smith’s availability for Saturday’s SEC opener.

Freshman running back Derrell Scott, meanwhile, is “not quite game-ready yet” but hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday’s game.

“We’ll know a little bit more later in the week of (Smith’s) status for the Georgia game,” Jones said during his weekly press conference Monday at Neyland Stadium.

“Von Pearson will be out. Daniel Helm practiced yesterday, looked great, so we'll have him back for the game. Ethan Wolf is back full-speed, so it's been great to have the tight ends back in our offense.”

Helm suffered an ankle injury during UT's loss Sept. 13 at Oklahoma, while Pearson (high ankle sprain) and Wolf (bruised knee) didn't play against the Sooners because of the injuries they suffered Sept. 6 against Arkansas State.

Jones said Scott’s recovery from the foot injury that sidelined him for Tennessee’s first three games is “still ongoing,” but he’s close to perhaps being ready to make his debut after practicing last week.

“It’s very good to have (Scott) back on the football field, and he brings another element in our backfield, and also competition,” Jones said. “Not quite game-ready yet, but we’ll make a determination on his status, if he’ll be on the travel squad or not going on the road.

“When you go on the road in the SEC, you have travel restrictions, so a lot of it is special-teams value, as well.”

What's the reasoning in not letting the whole team travel on road games?

To save money, the NCAA limits the number of players that a team can travel with to away games. I think the number in the SEC is 65

Thanks. I figured money surely couldn't be the reasoning with all that $$$ the NCAA, SEC, and the universities are raking in. Should've known.

SEC has a limit on the number of players who can dress for a SEC game. I think that limit is 70. The entire squad plus 29 or so walk-ons can travel to non Conference games.

Hope to see Scott play against Georgia. Maybe he will provide extra spark. Wish they would let him do kick returns

On Georgia's side....

On his radio show, Mark Richt said he is “not expecting” receivers Justin Scott-Wesley and Malcolm Mitchell to play this week against Tennessee.

Based on other reports, RB Keith Marshall and WR Jonathon Rumph are doubtful. RB Nick Chubb is questionable after only playing a few snaps in the Troy game with a broken thumb. DBs Damian Swann and DB Quincy Mauger are probable.

Mark Richt said on Sunday that there are no injury concerns for Todd Gurley even though he only played one quarter against Troy.

I read Derrell Scott runs a 4.55 40. Didn't realize he was that slow, but also read that he has "fast football speed"
