Guy asked this question on a Sooners board, and I must admit I do not have an answer. For 40's I would suspect the war and things might have been part of reason, but there really is large disparity between number of games in years and between schools.....anyone have an edumacated answer?

I know other conferences have done this in the past, especially the Big Ten, but why back in the 40s and 50s did fellow conference members not play the same amount of conference games?

Kentucky is credited with the SEC title going 5-1. Tennessee went 4-1 and one of those wins was UK's only loss. Alabama went 6-2. I figure had UT played one more game, the Sugar Bowl matchup that season would have been Oklahoma vs. Tennessee.

I'd like to know an answer. A lot of conferences played unbalanced conference schedules back then.
