Takeaways from SEC East weekend scrimmages - Saturday Down South

NEARLY 40,000 FANS WATCH TENNESSEE UNDER THE LIGHTS — An estimated 40,000 fans attended Saturday night’s open scrimmage at Neyland Stadium and Butch Jones took notice, thanking the crowd afterwards for creating a ‘game-like atmosphere’ for many newcomers who had never played in front of a sizable number of fans. It was the second practice of the day for the Vols who also took the field earlier in the morning. Jones, for the first time in weeks, seemed pleased with his players’ effort level and said starters should be announced on Monday.

Also, VN would meltdown if what happened to Georgia, happened to us yesterday.

MARK RICHT FRUSTRATED WITH LACK OF EXECUTION — After a multitude of bad shotgun snaps, a couple offsides penalties and Hutson Mason’s 54-yard pick six to Dominick Sanders, Georgia coach Mark Richt had seen enough at Friday’s scrimmage. “Maybe some guys got a little uptight with that, I don’t know,” Richt said according to Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph. “But there’s gonna be a lot more pressure when there’s 95,000 (in attendance) and a few million people watching. But there was just too much of that for this time of year.” In other areas, kicker Marshall Morgan appeared in midseason form with nine consecutive field goal makes while linebacker Jordan Jenkins eluded blockers to pick up nine tackles and two sacks.

Most conference teams are starting new QBs while some have QBs with some game experience, most have experienced OLs. Many teams will rely heavily on the run game early on, given the personnel up and down the league it's inevitable . Get ready for some old fashioned smash mouth football, only the strong will survive. :twocents:

"MIZZOU’S DEFENSE OUTPERFORMS MAUK, OFFENSE — Quarterback Maty Mauk completed just 8-of-20 passes against Mizzou’s second-team defense Saturday during the Tigers’ second scrimmage of the fall, but coach Gary Pinkel says there’s no reason to worry. Mauk misfired on several passes down the field — tallying five straight incompletions at one point — and never found a rhythm. Russell Hansbrough continued to handle much of the first-team rushing load and scored two touchdowns. Mizzou’s secondary played well, batting down several passes and intercepting two others — one by Raymond Wingo and the other Aarion Penton."

Most overrated team in the SEC... and possibly the most overrated player (Mauk).

If he's struggling against a 2nd D at Mizzou after they lost 7 starters... that's not good. Of course he wasn't a high % passer against a team with a pulse in his starts last year.

It would be just our luck if he has a career day in Neyland. :shakehead:

I hear you 18, but don't forget.... In Tyler Bray's last Orange & White game, he was 5-32 iirc.... against a Sal Sunseri-coordinated defense. I know it's Spring game vs Fall practice but sometimes the preseason performances can be deceiving.

I'm telling ya. EVERY TEAM HAS PROBLEMS. 8 win season is very doable. Coach Jones scares the poop out of the other coaches and the only one game planning for us seriously is the ole' ball coach because he was smart enough to see it coming first.

Our biggest issue this year is depth. Years past it was a whole multitude of issues not least of which was new schemes. We'd had a new defensive scheme basically every year for 5. Speed was another huge issue. Then youth/depth.

This year is different. Same system. More speed. Youth is still an issue but I count that under depth concerns.

If we can stay healthy this season we should do fairly well and meet most people's expectations.

Yes every team has problems, but most not as severe as we do at DT and our Gaurds.

I'd flip the UGA and USC games myself. Spurrier will be gunning for us as retribution for last year. We always play UGA tough and as the SEC opener? We'll be pumped.

The lamecocks have a big, veteran, OL along with a 1000yd + rusher. It will be by no means be easy.

He's a 50% guy anyways.

I wouldn't chalk up a loss just yet. We get Ole Miss after Bama and A&M and prior to LSU and Auburn.

Our October schedule is typically bad, but theirs is just brutal this year.

Beating both UF and Ole Miss on the road is a tall order
