Offensive notes per RTI

Defensive notes per RTI

Two notable updates pulled from the RTI updates...

Position swap: Neiko Creamer worked with the tight ends. He was originally recruited as an ‘athlete’ who could play wide receiver or tight end, but has worked with the linebackers since arriving on campus in spring.

Gaulden Gaining Ground: There has been a lot of speculation as to where freshman defensive back Rashaan Gaulden would fit in for the Vols secondary, be it at corner, nickel or safety. After the start of camp saw him get a little banged up and miss some time during contact work, Gaulden has been working with the cornerbacks this week and looks to be picking things up quite nicely.

Fast Five.

1. As we knew, Jashon Robertson lost his stripe.
2. Jakob Johsnon is working with LBs, said the coaching staff has gone to great pains asking they not go into detail. No idea what that means.
3. Derrell Scott was out of his green jersey and looked good at times.
4. Devring Young wore a green jersey.Bowles out of green. Orta sat out with a bandage on his nose. Miller, Wharton and Paul in the hole. No Maggitt.
5. Peterman leads Dobbs.

Zack's comments on the podcast about Jakob could prove true. Hybrid type that can play some LB in big packages, have his hand on the ground, or roam around as a pass rusher. Exciting prospect.

• Tennessee is experimenting with another possible position switch.

Freshman Neiko Creamer was signed as a receiver and switched to linebacker before spring practice began, but he swapped his orange jersey for a white No. 31 and worked with the tight ends on Friday.

The 6-foot-3, 229-pound freshman is the son of Andre Creamer, a four-year letterman who made 120 tackles and intercepted six passes as a defensive back and returned punts for the Vols in the 1980s.

• Some personnel items: Here was Tennessee's first-team kickoff coverage unit on Friday: kicker George Bullock; defensive backs Justin Coleman, Cam Sutton, Michael Williams, Devaun Swafford, LaDarrell McNeil and Lemond Johnson; and linebackers Bates, A.J. Johnson, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Elliott Berry.

Freshmen Moseley, Creamer, Cortez McDowell, Evan Berry, D'Andre Payne, along with junior college transfer linebacker Chris Weatherd, were among the second-team group.

I think creamer could be a good flex out TE/H Back. Another big, athletic kid who gives the defense a matchup problem esp with our other receivers.

JONES: I thought @WorleyBird_14 came out and had a good practice. A starting QB is like a pitcher, leading your team to victory

JONES: (on Jakob Johnson) We have to find the best fit for him. His strength is his ability to run and hit. He plays with great instincts.

JONES: (On open practice) It's critical for everyone. We need to see who our kicker is going to be and it's important for all evaluations.

JONES: We need as much flexibility as possible on O-line. Every rep they take is important but we need to continue recruiting O-line.

JONES: (On Maggitt) He rolled his ankle a few days ago but it's all precautionary. He's doing walk-throughs but will not play tom. night.

We got Derrell Scott back in practice today and he did some good things in goal line work.

'All precautionary' on Curt Maggitt's ankle, per Butch.

Chris Weatherd can run...He's very explosive. You can see that he has a lot of ability, it's all about repetitions.

-Neiko Creamer back on offense.

On the defensive front, Dewayne Hendrix and Derek Barnett continue to get plenty of work and Hendrix looked to have a better morning against the run than we have seen the last week or so.

The early part of practice appeared to be a good day of work for freshman tailback Derrell Scott. Freed from the green non-contact jersey he's been sporting since last week, Scott got the chance to show his physical strength in some inside runs as Jones was clearly challenging his line of scrimmage early. Scott's burst and elusiveness looked as good as advertised as it has all camp, but the ability pick up tough yards after contact was impressive.

Fortenberry: "We're down about five offensive linemen." @UTCoachJones says. Vols took zero offensive linemen in the 2012 class. Have 3 committed in 2015.

Freshman Neiko Creamer practiced at TE today as the staff tries to find where he works best. Jakob Johnson worked at LB.

In watching the QBs in the video highlights... they all seemed to throw it well today. Accuracy was noticeably better IMHO.
