After poor practices on Sunday and Monday drew the ire of head coach Butch Jones, Tennessee appeared to be a sharper, more focused football team during the early parts of Tuesday's practice.

Justin Coleman started off the session by knocking the ball from Marquez North's hands to earn a point for the defense, and Von Pearson leapt above Cam Sutton to answer for the offense. Josh Smith, who's had a strong start to camp, beat Malik Foreman on a slant for a score.

Cornerback D'Andre Payne made a play against the much larger Jason Croom, and five-star freshman Josh Malone beat Riyahd Jones for a score.

Safety Brian Randolph had the play of the day for the secondary, knocking freshman tight end Ethan Wolf off his route before stepping in front of the pass for an interception. Wolf bounced back, though, beating Curt Maggitt off the line to catch a touchdown.

A.J. Johnson, the Vols' All-SEC linebacker, chased safety LaDarrell McNeil out of one rep to go up against A.J. Branisel and proceeded to throw the sophomore tight end to the turf.

• Safety Todd Kelly, cornerback Evan Berry and nickel linebacker Elliott Berry were among the true freshmen to rotate in with the third group.

--Weatherd worked with D-line.
--Kelly delivered a nice hit that broke up a ball from Ryan Jenkins.
--Bowles and Orta got into a pushing/shoving match.
--Players who were limited: Pig Howard, Austin Sanders, Derrell Scott, Gavin Bryant and Jakob Johnson.

Moseley: Josh Smith, Quez, Von Pearson are looking good at receiver.

Moseley: The crowds are crazy here at Tennessee. It's a blessing to play at Tennessee and getting that call from @UTCoachJones

Josh Smith was the forgotten man in the summer by VN and the media but it sounds like he's having a great camp so far. Could be an effective option if he irons out the drop issues.

He was pretty good last year at everything besides actually catching the football.

Moseley said if he isn't the fastest guy on the team, it might be D. Young, Orta or Josh Smith. Says you aren't a true 4.3 guy unless you know what you're doing.

Young complimented Wharton.

JONES: I thought a very, very productive day in situational football

JONES: It was great to practice in some heat. Our guys responded.

JONES: Tomorrow is a day off from practice, they'll lift and do a lot of mental conditioning.

JONES: I thought that game mentality, they came out well. Great conditioned players are rewarded.

JONES: I saw it at 7:30 this morning in meetings. They were focused and interactive. I liked their overall approach today.

JONES: I was very pleased with the way they fought through it and attacked the day.

JONES on Mosley: He put on the pounds and put on the right pounds. That's a credit to him and to our nutrition staff and strength staff

JONES on Swafford: We're going to need him. His knowledge continues to evolve. He's done a great job and we need him to step up

JONES on Wharton: It's a great challenge, but it's a credit up him. He's made plays for us, he's going to make us better.

JONES: You earn trust every single day.

JONES on AJ Johnson: He needs to get around the offensive players to challenge them.

JONES: Cody Blanc is out for the year with an Achilles' tendon injury.

JONES: We will scrimmage Saturday.
