Let’s look at five reasons why the Tennessee football team might end its three-year bowl drought and make a postseason appearance in 2014.

Tomorrow we’ll look at five reasons the Vols might not their first postseason appearance since the 2010 Music City Bowl in Nashville, but today we’ll examine five reasons they might go bowling.
This is a more talented football team: Many things have been said about the direction of the Tennessee football program under second-year coach Butch Jones and his staff, but this is perhaps the most important and most accurate thing: The Vols become a more talented team. Scanning the field in the Spring of 2014 showed more talent than was on the field in the Spring of 2013, and there’s no reason to expect anything different when comparing this year’s upcoming preseason camp to last year’s preseason camp. Much of that talent if young, but it’s genuine talent; SEC-caliber talent. The Vols aren’t anywhere close to where they need to be to compete for championships, but they’re closer than they were last season, at least in terms of overall talent.
This is a faster football team: Between an obvious upgrade in overall recruiting and some position switches designed to manufacture more team speed from within, this is a faster football team than it was last season. Some speedier skill-position players were recruited on both sides of the ball, and some position switches were made on defense — linebackers to end, cornerbacks to safety, etc. — and the result should be a faster overall team. And that, as much as anything, has been Tennessee’s biggest problem the past couple of years. The Vols didn’t have nearly enough speed to make big plays that would have made it easier for them to overcome some of their deficiencies.
This team (probably) will have a senior quarterback: Say what you will about Justin Worley, but don’t forget that the last time he was reasonably healthy, he led the Vols to a win over then-11th-ranked South Carolina in Neyland Stadium. He’s not Peyton Manning, but he’s not bad. And he was showing clear signs of improvement toward the middle part of last season. And now he’s a senior. Assuming he holds off sophomore Joshua Dobbs for the starting spot, he’s plenty capable of surprising people and having a solid senior season. He’s the closest thing this team has to a leader on offense, and his experience could be a major plus for an offense that doesn’t have much of it at several key position.
This team has at least one All-SEC-caliber defender on all three levels of the defense: Dynamic junior Curt Maggitt is back from an ACL repair, and the former outside linebacker is spending most of his time these days at defensive end. Between him, senior middle linebacker A.J. Johnson, sophomore cornerback Cameron Sutton and rock-solid junior safety Brian Randolph, the Vols have at least one all-conference-caliber defender at all three levels of their defense. Obviously the Vols have a ton of questions to answer on both sides of the ball, including defense, but their defense does have a nice, solid nucleus to form a talented, experienced, sturdy foundation. And that should be a big plus, assuming those players stay healthy.
There are at least six winnable games on the schedule: Tennessee might not be favored to win six games this season, and the Vols’ schedule is absolutely brutal. But there certainly are at least six winnable games on that schedule. If the Vols win the four games they almost certainly will be favored to win — Utah State, Arkansas State, Tennessee-Chattanooga and Kentucky — they’d need just two more wins to become bowl-eligible. If they won at longtime, in-state rival Vanderbilt — a program undergoing major changes under a new coaching staff — then the Vols would need to win only one more game to get to six. And they do host winnable home games against Florida and Missouri in October and November. The path is not a simple one, and it’s anything but a guarantee, but getting to six wins certainly isn’t impossible.

Because we are UT and there is no excuse not be a bowl eligible every year! There is a reason we are # 2 or 3 when it comes to bowl games wins etc....

END OF STORY!

Is there a cliffsnotes version?

1) UT has MUCH better talent than last year
2) UT has much faster talent than last year
3) Worley (if healthy) should do an ok (though not great) job at QB.
4) Maggit is healthy and has some better (though young) D with him
5) UT has 6 winnable games on the roster - so just win the ones we are supposed to.

I really don't think there are any excuses if they don't make a bowl game. We have more depth, stable coaching staff, and I believe more talent in many key areas. We$ is right, if we can just win the games we're supposed to (UK, Vandy, Utah St, Ark St, and UT Chatt) then we just need ONE game out of the remaining SEVEN to go to a bowl. It sounds so easy on paper but obviously, that's not the case. If this team can beat either UGA or Florida early on the monkey might get off their back a bit and would really increase the chances of that recently elusive bowl game.

Also, a sneaky game in my mind is Ole Miss. I really think we have a good chance in that game. Its sandwiched right in the middle of two big road games for Ole Miss and if we could sneak out a win, that would also go a long long way towards a bowl game.

Not really. I just copy and pasted what Wes wrote to respect his article.

Wait a tick... this was a straight copy/paste? So his article ACTUALLY published like that??? That is one sad sack of an article if a professional journalist allowed his article to go to print in such sorry fashion.

EDIT: Ok, so reading that a second time, I might have over-reacted a tad. It wasn't as bad as it seemed just skimming through, unformatted.

QB play has got to be better than ever for this team to have a solid chance at a minimum of 6 wins. Seen the schedule and I'm leaving my orange tinted glasses on the nite stand for now.

"Because we are Tennessee" doesn't get you anything other than a little credit for what your team has done in the last 50 years or so. Means absolutely nothing for team 118

This is true. Unfortunately, if not for the incredible NFL success of Peyton Manning, most kids these days wouldn't know much about Tennessee at all. The 18 yo freshmen were 2 when we won the National Championship the last time, and we've done a good job at making ourselves almost irrelevant since then.

That's why it's so impressive and important that Butch is building and selling the UT brand back up. These kids are seeing what we see, but they don't remember what we remember.

There is no reason UT shouldn't go to a bowl this year. Wins over these teams would have the Vols bowling:

USU
Ark St.
UTC
Mizzou
UK
Vandy

That's not an impressive 6 wins, but it is 6 wins.

Just what do you think got CBJ and staff into the living rooms of top prospects across the nation, sure as hell wasn't b/c he was the coach of Cincy. :jpshakehead:

Missouri will be a loss this season for us but we should pick up a win against UGA or USC.

Agree 100%. Throw in a win against Ole Miss or USCe (I think a win against one of them is definitely possible) and you have a 7 Win team and solid proof to fans and recruits that Butch's plan is taking hold and will produce results.

I've seen this posted a couple of times now. I don't really understand the logic though. All things considered, USC and UGA should field much better teams than Mizzou does this year. Why do you think this?

Mizzou will leave Neyland with a loss and the young Vols beat an also young Reb team.

So you see UT losing at home to a Mizzou team that lost a ton but see UT winning on the road against either UGA or USC? :loco:

I think UT is a 7-win team this season. They could win 7 without an "upset." I'm well aware of the curse but it has to end at some time. I only bring up UF because it's at home. Ole Miss, UGA, and USC are on the road.

"Because we are Tennessee" is not a compliment to a 17 year old who has watched Tennessee play bad to mediocre football as long as they have been paying attention. To a recruit, the last time UT was good they were about 8 - 9 years old.

Just means some players just need to make plays, that is really what it comes down to. XO are important but its a chess game when it comes to College Football, even as slow as we was last year we still almost beat UGA and beat USCe. It was the teams that spread us out that we had problems with like Mizzu and Ubarn, now add the speed and talent that has winning in there blood it comes down to the inches and making or missing on plays

You are saying that it is more likely that we lose to Mizzou at home than beat UGA or USC on the road? Really?

they were younger than that when Tennessee had real national attention and respect.
