Top 10 College Football Teams of the 1990s

5. 1998: Tennessee (13-0)
Biggest regular-season win: vs. Florida, 20-17.
Postseason: SEC Championship game win over Mississippi State, 24-14; Fiesta Bowl win over Tennessee, 23-16.
Narrow escape: at Syracuse, 34-33.
The skinny: In his first year as a starter, Tee Martin did what his predecessor, Peyton Manning, never could: win a national title. Martin threw 19 touchdown passes and was a rushing threat, as well, while the UT defense got major contributions from the likes of DL Shaun Ellis, LB Eric Westmoreland and DB Deon Grant. Peerless Price led the receiving corps with 61 catches.

3. Peyton Manning, QB, Tennessee (1994-1997)
The Volunteers legend made 45 starts at UT, including eight as a true freshman, and amassed 11,201 passing yards in his career with 89 touchdown passes. A consensus first-team All-American in 1997, Manning was a Heisman Trophy runner-up that year and broke every passing record in school annals. He was 40-5 as a starter in his career and had 18 300-yard passing games.

Nebraska's close call in '97 was Missouri not Colorado and they needed a fluke kicked pass in the end zone on 4th down to pull it out...and even though they had a blemish I would say that '96 Florida was better than most of the teams on that list.

Still think if anyone was gonna beat Peyton for the Heisman, Woodson ain't a bad guy for it. He'll probably be in the NFL Hall on the first ballot.

Other points of interest from this "14 for 14" series of articles include:

(1) Tommy Thigpen named, not surprisingly, to "Top Recruiters in College Football": "He moved north from Auburn to Tennessee but left behind a slew of top prospects that he brought to the Tigers that ended up contributing to a remarkable turnaround. A long-time presence on top recruiter lists, Thigpen has connected with players and families like few can. He's been a revelation for the Vols lately and is a big reason why Butch Jones and company have turned things around on the recruiting trail in Knoxville." See 14 for '14: Top recruiters in college football | NFL.com. Tee Martin is also included on this list although I am not sure if he has a long enough track record of recruiting success to be so honored.

(2) Will Muschamp is designated as "unquestionably [sitting] on the hottest seat in the nation." 14 for '14: Hot-seat coaches in college football | NFL.com

(3) Our old and venerated guru of quarterbacks, David Cutcliffe, comes in 10th on their list of top coaches in the country. 14 for '14: Best head coaches in college football | NFL.com

(4) Josh Dobbs comes in 10th on their "Smartest Players in College Football" list. 14 for '14: Smartest players in college football | NFL.com

The Heisman became a joke after that! Just look at some of the players that have won it since. Manning was the best player that year by a mile! The only reason that he lost was all the Northern Sports Writers thought it was time for a defensive player to win it and he lost to Florida. It is still listed as one of the worst Heisman decisions of all time.

I also love how we won the Fiesta Bowl against our own team. :)

Given to the number 1 teams player instead of the best player, it is a joke ESPN even FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF the Heisman up, a player on a 8 and 4 team that rushed for 3,000 yards would have no chance these days.:banghead2: ESPN and Corso put on a show for Woodson, espn did not carry many SEC games those days, that's the reason Manning lost it FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF CORSO and the damn horse he rode in on.

Tebow won it as a Soph on a 9-3 UF team. They lost their bowl game after the Heisman presentation.

Baylor was 9-3 when RGIII won it in '11.

And most disgusting of all, don't forget that Paul Hornung won the Heisman in 1956 for a 2-8 Notre Dame team. It is an award for which consistent standards of excellence have never been applied.

Heisman is a media popularity contest loaded with regional and politics. I hated it pre-Manning too.

Very true, as any award with such ambiguous criteria is bound to be. The criteria that media types choose to apply changes annually based on that year's darling. In 1997, there was a clamoring for a defensive player to finally win and that also played into the resentment that much of the national sports media had towards the pre-season favorite that also came from the privileged background (in their eyes). The Sunday morning show "The Sports Reporters" on ESPN exemplified that more than anyone else.

The Heisman Trophy is the college football equivalent of a beauty pageant winner or an ice skating gold medalist. It's all subjective.
