| Pre-Season Computer Ranking, Showing All Sec Teams And where they placed. My opinion is, the first 3 games being wins, and UT would probably break in to the top 25 for the first time in years (so hard to believe It's been that long)

| 68 seems a tad low. But I don't know the criteria used as I haven't looked at it. I would put us top 50. Even with a dismal year last year. The sheer amount of starters back and our stars healthy puts us at a minimum top 50. |

| Many on here are "sure" we are going to beat Florida this year. I think it may happen because we have them at home, but 23 vs. 68 may be a stretch. For the record, I don't believe there is that big of a talent difference between the 2 teams, but they damn sure hold the mental edge! |

Coaches poll is the one I use the most, just cause those guys know football and probably have the least amount of bias. |

| Beat the brakes off of NC St on national TV, now that they are getting top 25 love, and the rest will take care of itself. |

I'd like to know the criteria that is fed into the computer. UF was not much better than UT last year, losing 6 of their last 8 regular season games before beating TOSU in the bowl game. And beating UT by 10 in G'ville. That alone hardly seems to justify that wide of a gap in ranking. And if he is using 2012 projections, while UF has most of its D talent returning, UT has virtually all of its O talent returning, and should be signifcantly better at the QB and WR positions. Of course, if he is putting a lot of weight on ST, I could see the wide gap. |

| The last time the Vols were ranked was September 1st, 2008 (Preseason ranked #18). When the polls are updated after the Florida game this year, we will be in it again! |

| Pre-season computer ranking is an oxymoron. Computer rankings are not meant to predict future performance but rather to reward wins vs tough competition, no matter how ugly they may have appeared to the human eye.
Computer rankings are supposed to remove human emotion & subjectivism; they emphasize cold hard facts such as margin of victory & home field advantage. They de-emphasize media bias & public opinion (cough, Notre Dame).
Computer polls become better with more data as the season progresses. A "pre-season computer ranking" can be nothing more than a description of last year. And last year we probably were about 68.
Go Vols!!!

| Here is the details/criteria: Quote: |
The CBSSports.com 124 rankings are produced by Jerry Palm's own computer formula. They measure how a team has performed against its schedule this season to date, including game location. Margin of victory is a consideration, to a degree. The date the game was played, the name on the front of the jersey, the name on the front of the opponents' jerseys, conference affiliation and what a team did last year are not factors. You can follow Jerry Palm on Twitter at @jppalm.
| Sounds like to me, the teams are just arbitrarily in order, not necessarily ranked, and every team will move considerably once the season starts.
Edit: After further notice, it looks like these current rankings could be a balance of preseason polls and preseason strength of schedule
