Can someone elaborate on exactly what this means? I've heard it several times but I'm not really sure what it's referring to

He had a philosophy of not getting beat deep. Keep everything in front of you. Well that lead to a lot of converted 3rd down and long situations. So that's how the term 3rd and Chavis got started.

Might have been some of larry slade's teaching or the athletes. Either way the db's weren't physical enough at the line and gave up ridiculously long conversions on 3rd down. Made you want to throw something at the TV or on the field at the game.

I had multiple conversations through the years while Chief was with us. He used to come to Franklin and play in Sterling Marlin's Golf Tournament each year. I always had my favorite color on and he would smile at me and offer a hearty handshake along with a great conversation about his expectations for the coming season! He tells it like it is and is a class act. The "3rd & Chavis" comments always irked me because I knew that none of the idiots posting them had the integrity of "The Chief."

I hope he is right about our offense this year and I, too, pull for his unit any time they are not playing us! Especially against the Bammers!

Good Luck, Chief! and GO VOLS!!
Sterling Marlin Golf Tournament? When/where is that? Let me know. I would like to play in it!

You're welcome - I certainly enjoyed it and thought Volnation would like to hear about it.

I actually was thinking about him and his coaching days at UT the other day. I would not mind him being head coach at UT one day if Dooley keeps failing. He did play for UT under John Majors, that would be interesting.

Would be a recruiting and staffing disaster. Chief is not and never will be head coaching material.
