Derek Dooley, when asked about impending college football playoff

Tennessee’s Derek Dooley: “This is something that has been talked about for over 20 years. I’ve always been in favor of the plus-one model. I think it’s a great way to preserve the one thing that makes college football special, and that’s the regular season, but still polish up the postseason to get that national championship right. I think it will be a good thing.” What’s the best way to get to four teams? “I don’t know. I’d just like to be there one day.”

I love his last statement.

Dooley might one day make a 4 team playoff. I wouldn't bet on it happening while he's at UT

Not in favor of a playoff. It's the best regular season in sports, period, precisely because of the bowl system. Every game counts as it should. If a playoff system is implemented, and an undefeated team rests their starters late in the year in a nonconference game because they are a lock for the playoffs, I think I'll puke. No way.

With the plus one model I dont think you're going to see a team slack off at the end of the year, one loss .. heck, just one "not so impressive win" could slide a team from 3 to 5 and be out of the hunt

What about if there are more than two teams who deserve consideration for the title game, like this year? And many times in the past?

If its left up to a computer to decide the contenders in 1-4 idea they are discussing now, then perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. Just using the same ranking method but taking the top 4 teams and creating a playoff would eliminate the chance of a team "slacking" or sitting their starters. Then playoffs take care of their own and we get 2 extra bowl games to enjoy.

Lol, I've grown to like your posts Fade... But it just figures that you would be against what most people are for. Although I disagree with ya, I understand your argument.

I just don't see a team resting in any game, because the top 4 is still not going to be a guarantee. They may rest players after building a 3-4 TD lead, but that happens now anyway.

I'm just a purist when it comes to the sport I love. There is something special about the regular season in college football that no other sport can match, and I think a playoff system will tarnish that.................jmo

If he stays long enough to recruit the talent and enough depth, he will be there as a Vol. We win the SEC and that will make the final 4. I believe we can win the SEC with Dooley after he has long enough to stack the roster. Bama and LSU are up now, but I am old enough to remember when we beat them several years running. Things go in cycles and we are on the upswing.

I honestly don't believe there is anything special about a system which heavily relies on "politics" in the form of coach and press rankings as opposed to settling it on the field.

Definitely see your point. I think with the plus 1, they can hold it together though. Past that would be a mistake IMO.
