Team chemistry question????

Not having played college ball I admit I don't know all the little things that are important to a football team. I was thinking the other day and began wondering about our incoming freshmen and the backups we have now. Wil lthe time they spend together working on the 2nd unit pay off when their time to start comes in a couple years? For Example; Nathan Peterman will have a working chemistry with the 2nd team WR's and lineman and my thinking is that should help come time for them to step in and replace our guys now without a year to have to adjust to each other. Is this thought correct or am I way off?

I propose this question for both my own need for understanding as well as discussion. GBO!!!!

No, that's the way it works. Practice makes perfect.

Lack of chemistry is part of the reason we were as bad as we were last year. Lack of chemistry breeds lack of desire breeds loss to KY Jelly.

Michigan States Kirk Cousins was the scout team quarterback for 2 years with BJ Cunningham as a reciever with him.

They spent the next three years as starters and between them they own quite a few records and KC is considered to be one of, if not THE best QB to ever play at MSU.

Chemistry is everything.

It goes a long way to help explain our recent woes. The last two senior classes have been decimated with defections and guys sent packing. Even next year's is going to be the same way. When they first came in together they had the opportunity to practice and get to know each other. As the classes fell apart and the coaching turnover kicked in there were very few left that were productive.

If CDD can get over the hump this season, the future will be much brighter in this area.

I agree...somewhat. The practice is where the chemistry is developed. The WR starts understanding the QB's thought process in situations and they know what to do when things go wrong.

Don't confuse timing with chemistry. The best practices in the world will perfect timing and go a long way toward developing chemistry. Chemistry is the willingness to use the tools and talent that you have to move toward a common goal with an unselfish attitude. You want to see chemistry, look at how the B-Ball Vols did this year. They weren't the most talented group but they played FOR each other and did what they could when they could. They aren't a perfect example but they out played their ability. That is what Good TEAM Chemistry will do for you.

Thanks! I was trying to get to that point but didn't make myself clear. My point was you can't just show up though and the chemistry be there it takes time together and being around each other just like the bball Vols. Which is why I think theses backups we have now will have that time together and when some of them get their time to start it will make it an easier adjustment for the team and the fans as well.

The last two years have been a red shirt and freshman (very limited backup) for our whole team. Now we are getting started and have two seasons of scrimmages under our belts. Whith a couple more good classes we'll be in the running!

Every team has chemistry of one kind or another. It could be bad, where everyone is just there for themselves or bad because no one is stepping up to lead, etc. Chemistry is just another word for how the individuals on the team interact and play together. You don't have to have a "love fest" on a team to have good chemistry. The teams with the best chemistry have at least a few guys who hate to lose and will drive themselves and everyone around them to be the best they can be on every play, drill, and set. Think Manning, Al Wilson. You think those unsigned free agent receivers the Colts kept bringing in who suddenly were league leaders in receptions suddenly just "stepped it up"? H E double hockey sticks NO! Manning just let them know that he didn't care if they were selling insurance last year, if they would put the effort in, he would make them good. Coaches can only drive players - you got to have other players to lead the team - then you have winning chemistry.

Don't underestimate the time spent with your teammates off of the field. A lot of chemistry is developed by your attitude towards your teammates. I was fortunate enough to play college baseball for 4 years and I can tell you from personal experience that the players that didn't hang out with the team at cookouts, parties, or bars didn't have a great relationship with most of their teammates. I know all that sounds like trouble but let's face it, college athletes ain't sitting in their dorm rooms after practices or games. When you spend time with your teammates off the field it goes a long way in how you interact on the field.
