Yeah, I heard that in the video as well, I just have a real hard time believing that nobody, absolutely nobody in the SEC ever used 4 down lineman. Ever.

Edit: Before 1990.

I think it said as their base defense, as in, UT ran that formation all the time as opposed to passing situations. 5-3 hornet.

I'm thinking you are right because UT is using the 40 in the 89 game against ucla as well.

That's what I remember as well. Wasn't Keith DeLong a linebacker that year?

You have to run a D that can stop sec offense and 34 is what is doing it now. Also it seems that the kids and athletes that you need to stop a sec team fit into a 34 defense better . I also think we are better setup for a 34 . Bigger faster and you need speed in the sec.

40 is 4 down linemen. 50 is 5 down linemen. I am think UT ran a 50 or something to the effect of.

34 and a 50 defenses are very similar, in most 34 defenses the outside backers align near the line of scrimmage in a two point stance, in short yardage they go to a three point hence the 50 look. Outside backers are part linebacker, and part end, they have to be able to play both.

Not much difference (in that they do the same things just a different alignment) from the 34 or 43, both have 7 man fronts, 34 usually have bigger defenders, 43 are usually for smaller faster defenders. Also, gap responsibility differ.

Either way a team that is multiple such as Bama is, puts pressure on the offense to recognize the scheme at the line and adapt accordingly which gives the defense the advantage. In my opinion, a 43 is better suited to stop a passing attack while a 34 is better for suited to stop a run team.

The Vols won't be a 34 or 43 defense next season, as Dooley as said they will be multiple much like Bama is, Vols are looking to create match up problems for the opposing offense and dictate the flow of the game.

We will see both fronts from time to time, and don't be surprised if they line up in a 43 and switch to a 34 right before the ball is snapped.

Just my two cents

34 defense is not viewed by coaches as innovative, but it is view that way by some fans.
