Wilhoit Named to Groza Award Watch List
Wilhoit Earned Freshman All-America Honors in 2003

COMPLETE GROZA WATCH LIST

Tennessee's James Wilhoit is one of 30 preliminary candidates for the 13th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award, it was announced Monday.

The sophomore from Hendersonville earned Freshman All-America honors in 2003 from Scripps Howard/FWAA after leading the Vols with 92 points. Wilhoit connected on 17-of-24 field goal attempts and made all 41 of his PATs. He also boomed 29 kickoffs for touchbacks en route to consensus Freshman All-SEC status.

Kickers on the Lou Groza Award Watch List were chosen based on statistics from the 2003 season and preseason expectations. However, all Division I-A kickers are eligible for the award, which is presented as part of the 2004 ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 9 in Orlando.

A panel of nearly 400 experts votes on the award, including Division I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference representatives, professional kickers and all previous Groza Award finalists.

The 20 semi-finalists for the Lou Groza Award will be announced in early November, followed with the naming of the three finalists two weeks later.

The award, now in its 13th year, is named for NFL Hall-of-Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Nicknamed "The Toe," Groza was one of the first people to truly make kicking an art form, and he helped usher in to football the idea that a player could be used exclusively for kicking.
