Tennessee basketball entered the AP Top 25 rankings Monday at No. 24. Although it’s good news, the Volunteers should be much higher in the polls.

A 77-70 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sunday night was not the most glamorous win for Tennessee basketball. But it was one of the defining wins of the season.

Rick Barnes’s team looked ugly as Josh Pastner mixed up his defense. GT would not go away. And that’s a Power Five team they played on the road.

So to find a way to win was huge. And with a 6-1 record, the Vols earned their way into the Top 25 for the first time since the Bruce Pearl days of men’s basketball on Rocky Top. Tennessee basketball was unranked in the Coaches Poll.

But they came in at No. 24 in the AP Poll. With all the turmoil happening related to the coaching search, Vol Nation is rightfully excited about this ranking. However, they should be angry.

Tennessee basketball’s ranking is far too low given their resume. If you look at what they’ve done so far, they should be flirting with the Top 15.

The Vols’ only loss is by single digits to the Villanova Wildcats on a neutral court. In case you’ve missed it, Villanova is 8-0 right now and ranked No. 4 in the country.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has three wins against Power Five schools. And all of them are away from home. One of them is against the Purdue Boilermakers.

And, in the most egregious way, Purdue is ranked ahead of them in both polls. Now, Purdue has two losses, to Tennessee basketball and then to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Although they have beaten four Power Five teams in a row, they should still be behind Tennessee.

In fact, Purdue is one of many teams ahead of the Vols with a worse resume. Just look at the other SEC teams first.

The Texas A&M Aggies are the only one with a better resume than Tennessee basketball. The Vols have more quality wins than the Florida Gators or Kentucky Wildcats.

Staying in the Top 10, let’s compare them to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame has one Power Five win to Tennessee’s three, but we’ll give them two since they also beat Wichita State. However, their one loss, to the Michigan State Spartans, is the equivalent of Tennessee’s loss to Villanova. Except the Irish lost that game by 18.

So the Vols have a better resume than Notre Dame.

Another team ahead of them in both polls is the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who only have two Power Five wins and a loss to the Miami Hurricanes. Again, Tennessee basketball’s resume is better.

Then you have the Cincinnati Bearcats and West Virginia Mountaineers, who have combined to beat one Power Five school.

Finally, the Baylor Bears are ahead of them in both polls despite two losses and only one win over a major program. How does that work?

I’m happy we are ranked at all. Barnes is doing a fabulous job. What were we ranked on SEC preseason? 13th??

Let them earn it vs UNC. If they beat them, then they deserve to be in the top 10 or 15.

This. While I'm happy we're doing well so far, I still need to see a little more from our team. UNC will tell us a lot for sure.

It'll take care of itself. Long season. I don't think they have the PG play, but hope to be proven wrong.

First, you make good points and a good argument. That said, who cares about where we're ranked? Just win baby! The rest will take care of itself. At least that is the attitude I hope the player have towards the polls.

As to you question, "Why?", well, a lot of it has to do with reputation and expectation. No way is Kentucky, currently, the 8th best team in the country. In fact, I could argue they aren't a top-20 team. But they have all these great freshmen and all this tradition, blah, blah, blah. Fair or not, that plays a role in it. Non-traditional powers like Tennessee have to earn their way in, and they won't be given the benefit of doubt.

It's December so I don't care. I'd like to stay under the radar, but now that we're ranked I just want to stay there. Being ranked gets your highlights on Sports Center and the other national shows. The pressure to win is going to increase. The lack of respect has been a motivator. Now they'll have to have the mindset that they're a top team in order to stay ranked.

Rankings this time of the year are as useless as tits on a bull...

Reminds me of Munson (Woody Harelson) milking the cow at the Amish community in "Kingpin" and then the Amish woman telling him they only have a bull as Munson is drinking the "milk"

The ongoing Royal Mongolian Wesson Oil Party with the football program has allowed both basketball teams to avoid media coverage. The coverage will add pressure soon enough. A stealthy approach is good for them.

Way too early in the season to be worried about Top 25 rankings. Seeding in the tourney is all that counts.

Basketball is more dependent on talent than other sports. That's why the rankings are crazy at the beginning of the year.

well said, but who cares. basketball isn't like football. we could have nearly 30 games left. i would rather be unranked going into the NC game. the higher we're ranked the bigger the target. put all that passion into something that makes a difference. :clapping:

love the passion OP. And agree with most. But in the words of Rick Flair, you gotta beat the man... And in the case of a Baylor, who doesn’t have an impressive resume, you gotta at least beat the man(UNC or Vill) that would beat the man(aka a Baylor) to earn big respect.

I'm reminded of a quote from "Rio Bravo" where John Wayne is praising, then admonishing his just-returned deputy who's been the hapless, town drunk (borrachon) for over a year.

"You were good in there tonight. Good as you've ever been. But you know one reason why you got by with it? They were laughing at you. Borrachon talking big.

You surprised them.

But next time they'll be ready for you. Next time they'll shoot first and laugh afterwards."

Tennessee has been a surprise. Now future opponents are paying attention and these impressive Vol wins are accumulating in video libraries of every team down schedule.

So why not relax and enjoy each game for itself, and let this team write its own story in realtime.

Working your way up builds confidence.
Getting kicked down the ladder has the opposite effect.
24 is okay this early.

Being underrated has always worked in UT's favor. Keep a low profile til UNC rolls into town then let the country know what we're all about!

I may take an "extended break" at work when they play... :D
