According to this local radio guy, Howland - a former Final Four Head Coach - wants the job.

Could he be our man?

You can do better. UT shouldn't be a school where coaching retreads get a second chance. That's what C-USA schools are for.

Got fired at UCLA for losing control of his players. 11 players left the program from 08-12 and he didn't get past the first round of the tourney in his last 4 or 5 years. Didn't even make the tournament in two of those years.

How is this the home run hire that so many of you are screaming for? How can you not make the tournament at UCLA?

Dude you are in denial. UT is a destination job for football, women's basketball, and baseball. Men's basketball not so much. He's a good coach. If that's the best we can do we should accept and support the guy.

During the UCLA-Duke telecast, commentator Dick Vitale went out of his way to mention Howland and say that he would be a good fit for lots of teams.

"I heard that," Howland says. "That was nice of him."

Before this, Howland had coached nonstop in Division I from 1994 at Northern Arizona, then on to Pittsburgh in '99 and great success in the East, followed by his 10 years at UCLA.

He has made a couple of trips recently, to see his friend Tim Floyd at Texas El Paso and Jamie Dixon, his former assistant and now the head man at Pitt. Those trips got the juices flowing even more.

"It's fun to be back at practice," he says, "and to watch guys you like and guys who know what they are doing."

So, the sabbatical and figurative thesis-writing continues. And it is hard to imagine that, sometime in the next several months, a program in need won't quickly realize that there is a candidate out there who has an overall record in Division I of 399-208, who has been coach of the year in each of the conferences he has coached and was national coach of the year in 2002.

Is this the article you are referencing?

LA and Knoxville are two different towns. I'd be willing to give him another shot.

Howland would be a sexier hire if he wasn't lobbying for every single job in the world. Geeeeeez

If he were to get the job. What would be his recruiting grounds. Does he have ties to certain areas. All I know of him is what everyone keeps saying about him on here.

The only thing is. If you didn't like Martin's O you will hate Howland's. He makes Martin look like Paul Westphal.

The NCAA was pounding on the door when UCLA canned Howland. His recruitment of Shabazz Muhammad was about as dirty as it gets. Several big named schools backed out of the race for a 5* potential program changer, because they couldn't justify getting their hands that dirty.

So, if you want a coach that is going to be under NCAA scrutiny for past indiscretions, go ahead with Howland.

He's not a great coach, and it's not the best you can do. Leave the coaching graveyards to the likes of UTEP, Houston, etc. Hire a coach on the incline, not the decline.
