South Carolina welcomes a new era to Columbia this spring with the addition of new head coach Mark Kingston, who has done a terrific job at previous stops such as South Florida and Illinois State. Those two programs, of course, have potential. But South Carolina is a totally different animal in a much more difficult league. But the foundation is there to have some immediate success … if the Gamecocks can figure out some of the bullpen roles. The starting rotation looks solid with righties Adam Hill and Cody Morris leading the charge. Hill has a combination of power stuff and feel, while the 6-foot-4 Morris looks to meet expectations. Morris is a couple of years removed from Tommy John surgery, but has premium stuff. He sat 93-96 at times in the fall, while often settling in at 91-94 with heavy sink on his fastball. He has a slurvy 78-80 breaking ball that could be more consistent, while the changeup is a good pitch at 81-83 mph with some fade and deception. He should have a good amount of success if he can command the fastball and continue to improve the breaking stuff. For now, freshman righty Logan Chapman will round out the rotation. Chapman sat 91-93 at times with his fastball in the fall, while also settling in at 89-91 with good command of the offering. He also has good feel for a 12-to-6 curveball at 74-76 mph, while he can get outs with a mid-80s changeup. Another righty, Carmen Mlodzinski, is worth watching for a potential rotation spot. Mlodzinski works in the 91-93 range with his fastball, but has been up to 95 before. His secondary stuff continues to develop, but the breaking ball has real promise. As for the bullpen, the Gamecocks are still figuring out some roles, but for now, it looks like righty Eddy Demurias will occupy the closer role, while sophomore Colby Lee will have an integral role out of the bullpen. Demurias worked in the 90-93 range in the fall with a quality slider, while Lee needs to be more consistent after struggling at times last season. There’s also juco transfer Ridge Chapman and freshman Shane Roberts. Chapman showed 92-94 mph heat in the fall, along with a power slider, while Roberts is a bulldog at 5-foot-11 with a low-90s fastball and slider in the 77-82 mph range.

Offensively, there’s no doubt the Gamecocks welcome back a wealth of experience. But this group also has a lot to prove after not having a single returning hitter who finished last season with a batting average of .300 or better. Chris Cullen and Hunter Taylor had strong falls behind the plate and are expected to take sizable steps forward offensively this spring, while LT Tolbert and Madison Stokes are veterans who have big-time potential. Both players did a much better job of driving the baseball in the fall, and many eyes will be on Stokes, who hit .224 last season after showing so much promise near the end of the 2016 campaign. Senior Jonah Bride gives the Gamecocks some leadership and presence on the left side of the infield, while it’s a safe bet right now to say that Carlos Cortes will join the .300 average club this spring. Cortes showed huge raw power last season with 12 homers and 41 RBIs, and is South Carolina’s premier offensive prospect for good reason. Meanwhile, fellow outfielder Jacob Olson led the team in hitting last year and looks to build off that campaign.
In terms of newcomers, keep an eye on 2B Noah Campbell and OF Kyle Jacobsen. Campbell is an athletic and physical middle infielder with power from the left side, while Jacobsen is an athletic outfielder with an advanced offensive approach. Jacobsen also will be a draft-eligible sophomore next season, meaning he can go in the 2019 draft.
