Glad to see another Vol head to Cincy. Good luck, Andy! The Reds' pen is worse than awful, so there is plenty of opportunity.

I was surprised to see Andy get drafted this high. I picked him to go in the later rounds somewhere around 20th-30th rounds.

Recent results notwithstanding, Cox is a LHP with a 90+mph fastball and a ++ slider. The Reds organization can do a lot with that kind of potential.

I think Andy has a chance, once he gets totally healthy, to make some noise. He cuold be a starter or a lefty specialist. I am sure he was a senior sign and did not get a big signing bonus, but he is living the dream. If you see a senior in college go rounds 6-10 it is normally someone signing well below slot. However, he will always be a 7th round pick.

Senior signing.

Phone rings ten minutes before the team is on the clock: "Will you sign for $5K?"
If yes, they draft; if no, they hang up and make another call until a senior agrees. No negotiating.

They need the slot room for the early round guys.

I get it...dude has a degree, gonna be getting married, but dreams are dreams I guess, can't fault him for that I suppose.

Absolutely not. Take his best shot at his dream while he can.
If you say no to that call, you wonder "what if?" your whole life.

I agree, absolutely. I wish him nothing but the best, no doubt he's given his all while here. #VFL

This is why I posted many are better off being picked after the top 10 rounds . In fact I have heard stories of teams telling kids to say no to other teams about the top 10 round where there will give then more later in the draft

As dishonest as the draft is I am waiting for the day where a senior kid agree verbally to 5-10k on draft day and then a few days later says nope I moving on to the real world unless I get 100k. Actually those kids have a hell of a lot more leverage in that spot than anyone seems to think. Teams have to sign all those top 10 guys or things change dramatically for that org

Zac Godley was a senior sign in the 10th round for the Cubs, got a signing bonus of around $10,000 and was in the majors end of last season making the big league minimum of $550,000 and was called up again last week. Cant get there unless you try.
