Speaking of workouts, we're told that none other than Vols superstar quarterback Joshua Dobbs tried out this week for Tennessee's baseball team and could well join the roster of Vols' baseball coach Dave Serrano. AstroDobbs meet DiamondDobbs? He's excelled on the diamond before all through high school. If Dobbs were to join the roster sources say he would not miss any spring practice time in football.

Wouldn't be the first time a quarterback was a baseball player for UT. I can think of three: Todd Helton, Condredge Holloway and Alan Cockerel. If I'm not mistaken, all three were All-Americans in baseball.

I don't know if Butch would really care for this... what if he injures himself? I know football is a lot more physical, but injuries happen in baseball too.

This doesn't make sense to me. When he came in as a freshman there was talk about what a good player he was and that he might do both. But your junior year while preparing for a huge football season? And with his crazy major? To say nothing of a potential NFL career afterwards. If football didn't work out he could play next spring.

Maybe they are trying to boost baseball attendance. Throw him out as a pinch hitter every now and then.

And after all the craziness across multiple sports him getting injured playing baseball would be par for the course.

Great... Now instead of working on routes and timing with the WRs he will be working on location of the Fastball. :eek:k:

Did you not read the above sentence: "If Dobbs were to join the roster sources say he would not miss any spring practice time in football."

Needs to work on his passing this off-season.

Too much at stake next year.

Too much stake for you or him? If he wants to play baseball and can help out the team by all means he should. He's in college, let him enjoy it........

Coming up on the biggest season and he tries out for baseball. WTF

See above.....

Good for him, if he enjoys it by all means play.

totally agree....

Baseball has 1 open roster spot and if Dobbs can contribute in any way I'm sure CDS would love to have a person of his athleticism and character on the roster. It's not like he's taking a roster spot from someone or taking a part of the 11.7 scholarships baseball has to offer.

Time spent trying out, practicing, and playing baseball should be spent practing football.

From the perspective of the player, this makes absolute sense. He is a good enough athlete to play professional sports, but not in the NFL. He has even less potential for the NFL than Tebow. With his passing skills, he would never make an NFL roster as a QB. If Tebow had been willing to do so, he probably could have developed into a TE/H-back/fullback. I don't think there is another NFL position Dobbs could play. The other three QBs mentioned above became pro baseball players. That is probably Dobbs' only option.

Says who?

Focusing on a single sport hones the skills required for that particular activity but doesn’t necessarily develop a better athlete and the fundamental movement skills required in all sports.

Playing multiple sports also can build better teammates. A football star who is a role player in another sport gives that athlete perspective he might not otherwise have.

Playing multiple sports also lessens the chance for burnout because of expanded interest.

Even MJ played baseball in his prime and still won titles. We can make fun of his baseball career, hut he was in AAA and that's still pretty good players.

Maybe he will finally learn how to throw accurately - if that's even possible to learn as it seems people either have it naturally or not. Would be huge plus for his football career as well.

The dude is a 20-something college student. You only get these experiences once in a lifetime. He should do whatever the flip he wants.

Personally I hope he tries out, kills it, and helps the baseVols win a few more games... Especially if it is true he won't miss any spring practice.

The other poster won't get this, everyone wants specialists these days. No one understands the value of variety. Heck, just the ability to have some fun and be distracted from the pressure will benefit him. This could be good for him.

Have fun and be distracted?

Hell let's give the team off the entire semester to do an internship in vegas

CBJ cleared him to try-out. He hit BP with the team on Wednesday and took infield with them yesterday. Word is his try-out will last through the weekend and then a decision will be made. Swing looked great on Wednesday, and his hands and footwork were pretty impressive for a guy who hasn't played in a few years. He lined up at SS for infield. Only area he needed to work on was throwing (shocker), but all in all I think he's got a real shot at making it. GBO

Per PG Dobbs wasn't very well thought of at all as a baseball player. 1star maybe 2star at most for the stat watchers

A football teams needs it's QB/leader in offseason workouts and other offseason activities. That's very important

Much more important than a walk on or less talent wasting time at that ballpark

Hubbs called him "Superstar QB Josh Dobbs". So, it sounds like e doesn't need any more football practice. Right?

2010 Video footage:

Infield:
R Joshua Dobbs IF 2010 Southeast Underclass Showcase

Hitting:
R Joshua Dobbs Hitting 2010 Southeast Underclass Showcase

Looks like a smooth glove fielding and very good footwork however arm strength is below average for the position. Has a hitch in his swing however his hand/bat speed is good.

Note: footage is over 5 years old a lot has probably changed over the years........both good and bad.

Last known summer team was with the Atlanta Blue Jays which is a highly respected summer team/program out of Atlanta. Was teammates with current Vols outfielder Vincent Jackson.
