2015 MLB Draft notes: three early predictions - Minor League Ball

***Shiny New Toy Syndrome: Everyone seems intrigued with Georgia high school catcher Tyler Stephenson, who has jumped from "decent prospect but will probably go to college at Georgia Tech" to "best high school catcher in the draft," with some rumors putting him in the Top Five players overall. This seems to be at the expense of California high school catcher Chris Betts, who scouts are more familiar with and who has a longer track record of success.

There's nothing wrong with Betts, who has had a good spring, but his stock seems down somewhat compared to Stephenson. It is true that Stephenson's physical defensive tools are a little better but both bats look excellent and I do think that Betts can stay behind the plate. Betts' biggest problem may be the fact that he isn't the new face that analysts (both traditional and sabermetric) get obsessed with.

Recent mocks (like this one from Baseball America) have Stephenson going 14th to the home-state Braves and Betts falling to the bottom of the first round, which would have seemed like a strange thing three months ago. Middle of the first round makes sense for Stephenson and the Braves would seem a logical fit, but I think that neighborhood still makes sense for Betts, too. PREDICTION: Betts is off the board by 20.

***Defense Schmeefense: One of the best college hitters this spring has been outfielder Cristin Stewart from the University of Tennessee, currently hitting .311/.443/.633 with 15 homers, 28 walks, and 38 strikeouts in 177 at-bats. Stewart has a powerful left-handed bat and reliable sources are impressed with his pure hitting skills; he isn't just a brute-force masher but should hit for a good average and get on base as well. Despite his performance, his offensive tools, and a relative lack of power hitters in the draft, Stewart is not being projected for the first round by most mock drafters, rumors putting him into the comp rounds or early second.

Why? Stewart isn't much of a fielder, reportedly lacking the arm strength and range to play anywhere but left field. The offensive tools are here but the defensive ones are mediocre at best; as a result he isn't seen as a pure first-rounder by everyone.

But I said "everyone", not "anyone." I'd bet good money that a team picking in the later half of the first round (Cardinals? Orioles? Athletics?) looking for a quick impact bat will put aside concerns about the glove and focus on Stewart's hitting. PREDICTION: He gets picked between 20th and 26th.

Need to add cabbage to the big worry list

Whatever happened with the Jackson injury??

VJax posted on his twitter that it's nice to be able to swing the bat or something to that affect, recently.

Yeah, Cabbage, Hayes, Davila...even Halas...maybe Neil...all on the "CDS must beat the draft list"

yeah if we can keep 3 of Hayes, Betts, Davilla, Cabbage, and Neely it must be considered a huge victory. Even 2

Thanks, as I dig a little more into the prospects ill post more ideas. But as always, I expect Vandy to lose a TON of prospects.

Counting the names, Vandy has oversigned this recruiting class by at least four. They fully anticipate losing some of their recruits to the Draft, and they also have two kids coming back after redshirting this year.

That said, while they lose their share of recruits, they also keep a ton of them. But you can't keep them if you don't sign them first.

Vandy doesn't recruit anymore, they reload. As of right now we have 14 players headed out for summer ball. Vandy will send 10 to the Cape alone. It's sick. They have the number 1 ranked class coming in on top of that. Three guys going in the first round of this draft...Florida is right there too, 12 guys to the Cape and the 2nd ranked class...that's a ton of talent.

Yes it is. They have a huge class coming, but you can see how high alot of them are ranked. Vandy is making Bama's football dynasty look small. Its utterly crazy.

On our 4 commits, I expect them all to go pro sadly. Serrano got screwed with Davilla and Cabbage. They took off at the worst time.

Another thing to add is that Vandy even lost Xavier Turner

Bump that took the just released MLB.com Pipeline top 200 and added it beside the players. Garrett and Trey really took off. Vandy is stupid talented but really underwhelmed with LSU and Arky class. We gonna need some help in the draft.

All we can do is keep our fingers crossed at this point. I also noticed that our class is the smallest of those ranked in the Top 10, maybe we ought to do what the others are doing.

I think Serrano is starting next year. Look at it in PG. Baseball recruiting, like softball, is so far accelerated its tough.

MLB Draft 2015: James Kaprielian impresses, Ke'Bryan Hayes on Dodgers' radar - True Blue LA

I was told last week by a source that the Dodgers may already have a handshake agreement with Concordia Lutheran High School (TX) third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to take him at either pick 24 or 35, depending on how the scenarios play out in front of them. Hayes has a commitment to Tennessee but other outlets have considered him signable and my source suggests he's ready to sign and would likely do so with Los Angeles below the suggested signing amount at either pick.

Typically with below-slot deals, a team is drafting a player of lesser talent than what they may otherwise have available to them at that pick (with exceptions in the top three or so picks), but that isn't necessarily the case with Hayes. Ke'Bryan ranks as my 26th best player in this year's draft, and might be one of the more complete high school hitters available.

2015 MLB Draft: prospects with major league bloodlines, part one - Minor League Ball

Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B: Son of former major leaguer Charlie Hayes, Texas prep Ke'Bryan isn't as toolsy as some but is very polished, with a mature hitting approach, solid power, and enough athleticism/arm strength to remain at third base. He will get drafted early enough to pass up college at Tennessee and many experts see him as being similar to his father down the line.

Angels MLB Draft Candidates: The Hitters - Halos Heaven

I think one of Randolph or Hayes should be available when the Angels pick, but both project as more complementary pieces than potential franchise players. Obviously, the Angels have a terrible track record at developing prepsters on the left side of the infield (eg, Wood, McPherson, Cowart), so my superstition overtakes my forebrain in these matters, but these two still seem like uneasy fits for an organization that may not have 5-6 years to develop them into contributors. Barring some extraordinary circumstance which allows Whitley to parachute into the #26 spot, Chris Betts seems the most likely option for the Angels of this group of high schoolers.

2015 Draft: Baseball America's Mock Draft v4.0 - River Avenue Blues

With the 30th overall selection, the compensation pick for David Robertson, Manuel has the Yankees selecting California HS C Chris Betts. Here’s my profile on Betts. Like Ponce, the Yankees have been connected to Betts for several weeks now. He’s a bat first catcher with huge left-handed power, maybe the most in the draft, but he’s not a lock to stay behind the plate. It’s not impossible, Betts just has work to do defensively. - See more at: 2015 Draft: Baseball America's Mock Draft v4.0 - River Avenue Blues

2015 MLB Mock Draft v2.0 | FanGraphs Baseball

There’s plenty of buzz on players that could sneak into the top 26 pick and about the teams targeting them at lower picks.

Of the high school bats, there’s CF Nick Plummer (Video could sneak in back half of round one, some interest from Brewers, Yankees and D’Backs beyond pick 26) and 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (many spots from 20-35 could be homes, Royals, Blue Jays and Braves are on him). SS Jalen Miller (Braves’ multiple picks among rumored fits) and CF Eric Jenkins (Blue Jays are mentioned the most) are also in the mix, but likely fall a little later. LF Chad Smith has been rumored for months to have a deal with the Rangers at 45th overall and RF Bryce Denton and 1B Josh Naylor should both be gone by the middle of round two. Scouts are split on his talent, but there’s some buzz that 3B Trey Cabbage could go in day one (42 picks), with the Braves mentioned most.

Serrano said yesterday that he expected Hayes and Betts to sign a professional contract and not attend UT. Said he expects the rest of the recruits to come to UT.
