VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

In an effort to get all the candidates into one thread....I'll add to it as names pop up.

Head Coaches


Dave Serrano-Cal State Fullerton
Currently 17-4(conf) 37-14(overall)
As HC at CSF 134-56
As HC at UC Irvine 114-66-1
Dave Serrano has been a top recruiter. Consistent winner, at CSF 40+ wins in each season. Has been to the CWS once at CSF and at UC Irvine. Spent two seasons as pitching coach at UT under Delmonico. Current salary $150,000

Dan McDonnell - Louisville HC
Currently 14-12(conf) 29-26(overall)
185-77 (4 seasons) as HC @ Louisville
Has been to one CWS, 2 NCAA regional and 1 super regional. He spent 6 years at Ole Miss as an assistant. 2010 he won 50 games. He lost 6 players to the draft so 2011 has been subpar. Current salary $400,000

Jim Schlossnagle - HC TCU - 378-176 (overall) 171-79 (Conf) Has gone to the NCAA regional every year but his first at UNLV over his career. Went to the CWS in 2010. Recieved a contract extension through 2016 in 2010 after going 54-14. Currently The Frogs are 19-3 (conf) and 39-15 (overall) in 2011.

Tim Esmay-Arizona State University
Currently 14-7 (conf) 36-13 (overall)
2010 record 20-7 (conf) 47-8 (overall)
Esmay was interim coach in 2010 at ASU,after several seasons as an assistant. In 8 seasons as HC at Utah he was 213-235-1. In his first season at Utah he won the WAC. The next 7 season the best finish was second.
current salary: $ 175,000

Bobby Pierce-Troy
Currently 20-9(conf) 39-16(overall)
817-390 (overall ) Bama graduate
While at Univerity of Alabama-Huntsville:" During his time in Huntsville, Pierce posted a 276-108 record in seven seasons. He guided the Chargers to the 2001 Gulf South Conference title and four NCAA regional tournament appearances after founding the program in 1995." He has a son, currently a junior, playing for Troy.

Scott Stricklin- Kent State University
Currently 45-17(overall)
222-128(overall)
Stricklin was a former Kent State catcher. Before his HC stint at Kent, he was a recruiting coordinator at Ga. Tech and Vandy. Made it to the NCAA Regionals this year beating #5 ranked Texas, but eliminated two days later by the Longhorns. This was his fourh trip to the tourney in 7 years.

Chris Finwood - WKU
Currently 17-13(conf) 32-22(overall)
241-249(overall) 6 years
Came to WKU after four seasons as an asst. at Auburn. He's made it to the NCAA twice in 2008-9.

Gary Gilmore
-Coastal Carolina
Currently 19-7(conf) 36-18(overall)
609-303 (overall)

Eric Bakich - HC Maryland -Currently - 5-24(conf) 21-34(overall)
2010 Record - 5-25(conf) 17-39(overall)
He's in his second season at Maryland. His first recruiting class was top 25 for the first time in school history. Spent 7 years as an asst. at Vandy, had top 25 classes all 7 years and the nations top class in 2005.

Mike Kennedy - HC Elon
Currently 23-7(conf) 36-19(overall)
510-350(overall) 15 years. He's Elon's winningest HC. He' a former Elon player and Asst. He's taken Elon to 5 regionals in the past 6 yrs.

Brian Shoop- UAB -
Currently 9-15(conf) 27-26(overal)
802-425-1 (overall)
Spent 7 seasons at MSU as an Asst., spent 17 years at Birmingham-Southern and compiled a 692-307-1 record winning at least 30 games 16 out of 17 seasons.

Scott Berry - HC Southern Miss.
Currently 16-8(conf) 38-15(overall)
74-39(overall) 2nd year. CUSA Champs in first season. HC - Meridian (97-00) During his four-year tenure at Meridian, Berry's squad spent the entire time in the top 10 of the national polls.

Tim Corbin-Vandy (why leave Vandy?)

Ray Tanner -USCe - HC (he's making bank, he's at the top of the league currently, why make the move)



Associate Head Coaches

Fred Corral - UM Associate HC, former Vol Asst. Coach(2007-09)(2003-04), no HC experience

Pat Shine- UC Irvine Associate HC, heir apparent to Mike Gillespie (if you want to take a risk, this would be a good candidate)

Chad Holbrook - USCe - Associate HC for 3 seasons. Was an Asst. at UNC. Very solid recruiter in those days.

Kevin McMullan - Associate HC at UVA. 2009 Asst. of the Year. Recruiting coordinator, hitting coach and works with infielders and catchers. Top ranked team at 45-6 with .309 BA and .981 fielding pct.


Assistants

Mike Bell - Oklahoma University - Pitching Coach - Was a Vol Asst. from 2005 to 2007, helped recruit back to back top 15 classes. No HC experience.

Greg Evans - Asst Coach OSU 8th season, recruiting coordinator and defensive coach. Ole Miss player/grad. OSU set a school record with a .978 fielding percentage in 2010, which also ranked fifth nationally

Todd Butler - Hitting Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Arkansas (6th season), spent 8 seasons at Bama. He was a HC at McNeese State, in his final season he won the Conference and made the NCAA tourney. Lots of SEC recruiting exp.

Karl Kuhn - Asst. Coach UVA - Pitching Coach

Chris Burke - Former Vol and MLB player - volunteer asst. at Louisville

Rick Honeycutt -Former Vol and MLB player, currently Pitching Coach for the Dodgers

Ash Lawson - Current UT Asst./Recruiting Coordinator, 6 yrs. w/ San Diego Padres, 5 yrs. at Tennessee Wesleyan where he compiled a 121-46 record as HC.

Alan Cockrell - Currently the Hitting Coach for the Seattle Mariners, spent 3 yrs. with the Colorado Rockies as hitting coach, and was a former Vol baseball and football player.

Buzz i've hears from some former players is that Corbin might actually consider leaving Vandy bc there is an athletic department with an AD(quality or lack of being debatable) and for pay etc. Think it would have to be just right though.

In this article he seems to like the lack of an AD. That was afew years ago and things change. Vandy did keep him from Auburn at one time. They don't have to put his salary out there, so I'm not sure what he's making, I just can't see us outbidding them.

Somebody help me if I am wrong but I think Dave Serrano was looked at before but UT can not hire a head coach that does not have a degree. If I am wrong and he has one I would love to have him.

That may have been an issue, it certainly kept him from the Oregon job.
