South Carolina new No. 1 in women's hoops attendance

South Carolina has ended Tennessee's 11-year run atop the attendance standings in women's basketball.

The Gamecocks averaged 12,293 fans at home the past season, the most in the country. The Lady Vols were second, with 10,375. South Carolina jumped nearly 6,000 fans per game this season.

"I experienced a packed house at Colonial Life Arena for all of our home games, but it still amazes me to read what took place on our campus, our city, our state last season," South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. "I can't wait to see what Gamecock Nation has in store for the entire country to see."

The Gamecocks made it to the Final Four the past season and have most of the team coming back to attempt a return trip.

This is the first year since 1994 that neither Tennessee nor UConn is No. 1 in attendance. The national champion Huskies were sixth the past season, with an average of 8,216 fans.

Buoyed by South Carolina and Tennessee, the Southeastern Conference led the nation in women's basketball attendance and became just the second league in NCAA history to top the one million mark. It's the first time since 1984 that the conference is No. 1 in attendance, and this snaps a string of 15 straight seasons in which the Big 12 led the nation.

The SEC total (1,011,451) is the fourth-best by any league in NCAA history. Only the Big 12 has recorded more attendance in a single season.

In all, more than 8.1 million fans attended games the past season, the fourth-highest total in the 34-year history of NCAA women's basketball. There was an increase of nearly 2,400 fans at the NCAA Tournament from the previous season.

"We're pleased to see women's basketball attendance continuing to rise, as it indicates fan support for the sport and an allegiance to favorite NCAA college and university teams," said Anucha Browne, vice president of women's basketball championships.

"Fans continue to follow women's basketball, and the attendance figures indicate this past year was full of excitement during the team tournament runs as well as during the regular season."

I don't understand the "yawn" and "sun doesn't shine...." comments. Either you're a fan or not and that means coming out and supporting your team no matter what! I'm offended that SC beat us in attendance.

You posted this today, but everyone knew the attendance figures FOUR MONTHS ago, and it was discussed in depth on this board FOUR MONTHS ago.

I'll add what I added 4 months ago. Look at the demographics in the stands for Lady Vol games. The generation that still has disposable income is getting too old to attend many LV games (and too fat to fit the seats).

I'm afraid it will get worse for us. Vol football is a hotter ticket than ever, and people will feel more positive about watching the Barnes chapter unfold with the men's team.

But who wants to complain about overall progress? It's a great time to be a Vol fan. Just an even better time to be an affluent Vol fan.

This was posted on July 6 by the Associated Press and picked up by ESPN. I thought it was an interesting article.

This coming season South Carolina is going to actually sell the tickets and see how many fans will come back.

SC center court season ticket is $60
UT center court is $280

SC deadcenter section on each side requires a $55 donation, the other center court sections don't.

Went online to UT site and could not find donation amount required for center court at UT. Have been told it would be hefty, but no verification of that.

SC can get a lot more fans to attend games with those prices. A family of four could purchase season tickets for less than the cost of one season ticket at UT.

Yeah, they will out draw us again. Not just because of fan support and winning, some of it will be simple economics.

Not again guys....No more real estate banter.

OK, So. Carolina is number one in attendance. The real competition is on the court, not in the stands.

I think it is WONDERFUL that SC has over 12,000 fans per game. Hope it's even higher next season.

Also hope all women's college basketball teams have 12,000+ fans at their games. Hope TN has 20,000+ fans at their games.

Love the game. Want the women's teams to have many fans.

Sorry, couldn't care less.

And why post what you did? Trying to stir up controversy? I thought you were supposed to be one of the "good guys".
just saying why UConn attendance may be down as well 15.00 - 22.00 per at the XL Center (last time I saw). Im not sure of the price on campus (Gampel), Webster Arena or down at the casino where the CT Sun play. Im not sure if the 4 venue are helping or hurting (fannies in the seat or do the prices make up for the lack of fannies).

You're only thinking I'm stirring because that's what you want to think. You and I both know that many think Connecticut is some "rich" "wealthy" state.

I know this thread had nothing to do about uconn or whatever conference it plays in. You interjected because you want to stir up trouble. I don't care about Connecticut, the price of anything in it, or how anyone perceives it. And if I did, it would be totally unrelated to what this thread addressed. You are just trying to cause controversy by interjecting your first totally unrelated post. This is the last time I will respond to a rude guest (i.e. you) stirring up the TN forum. Learn some manners or go home. Yeah, that's rude; I guess I have to speak your language to be understood.
