It is one thing to get beat and quite another to play meekly and give games away because you can't handle the pressure. That's what we did tonight, just as we did against Louisville two or three years ago. Another massive choke job--let's call a spade and spade. We sure did play like LADY vols.
We started well--and then instead of gaining confidence we slowly but quite noticeably fell apart! Why? Who can explain it? Graves played scared, and so did just about everybody on the team. It's not a question of talent, we simply cannot handle pressure. We were not aggressive. We did not attack the basket. We had 1 free throw attempt in the game--and ZERO free throws made. Not one point from the FT line! Are you kidding?
We can't handle pressure--and it goes back to the coach. The diehard will talk about our injuries, and oh, wasn't Warlick brilliant to get us to the Elite Eight. We had the EASIEST draw of any of the top seeds! None of the first three teams we played were in the top 35, and we played two of them at home. We had to hang on to beat Pitt, and only a miraculous comeback saved us against 11 seed Zaga. Why are we falling behind by 17 to Zaga.
We basically asked Maryland to win the game because we were too bad and too nervous to do so, and so they did. Maryland didn't beat us--we beat ourselves, again. Geno must feel sorry for us: The once-mighty Vols, too scared to win a basketball game.
