As I understand it (warning - I am no rules expert), players granted an athletic scholarship have 5 years to complete 4. There are no restrictions on what sport the athletic scholarship is for. The player, coach, and university decide on whether a redshirt is granted/used. The player is under NO obligation to except a redshirt. This is an often misunderstood aspect of the redshirt. The player can refuse the redshirt and/or walk away at any time. Universities are also under no obligation to grant a redshirt if a player requests one. Medical redshirts are but one example. A redshirt can be granted for any reason - academics, maturity, seasoning, whatever. As the rule states, the player has 5 years to complete 4.
