Will the extra benefits allowed in Power 5 Conference scholarships hurt teams like UConn in recruiting? Would this extra benefit by others not entice players to shun them to some extent?

Geno may have to reach into his own pockets (as if he hasn't before).

From ESPNW: "It's going to be a struggle for poorer schools, and even successful programs who aren't in a big football conference, such as UConn, which astonishingly says it loses money on both men's and women's basketball. With the Power 5 upping benefits to their athletes, schools without big FBS bucks will need to find money elsewhere to compete. Good luck. "When you look at legislative funding for higher ed, it's diminishing every year," said Vermont's Corran. "That means it's either coming from the institution itself through increased tuition and fees, or it's going to come from the existing athletic budget. And if it comes from the athletic budget, that means something is going to have to be cut."

"Men's non-revenue sports are likely to go first, but women's programs won't be immune. Many schools will be forced to downsize departments from top to bottom, Lopiano says -- including their women's programs."

Let's have schools just for athletics and schools for actually earning a degree. Oh, snap, that's why it's called the Power 5. Then it would be the Poorer 5 for earning a degree. :whistling:

GO VOLS!

Steve Logan, ex-ECU coach who has been a head coach in NFL Europe and has been an assistant coach in the NFL, said last week that the easiest way to knock out football programs from FBS/ non-power 5 schools was to up the scholarship limits. His point was that, with limited scholarships less than 85 players, schools like ECU, Central Michigan, Appy State had a CHANCE at an upset because a power school was forced to limit its' talent.

He also said that there are 2 schools looking for that "Golden Ticket" into the the Power 5 and it involves the Big 12. Look for Cincy, Boise St. and Brigham Young to be the top 3 new members to the Big 12 to bring that number to 14. These schools make sense for various reason with Cincy making the most sense because of basketball and a geographical partner with WVU.
