I love grammar/spelling purists that don't bother to check their facts. Both spellings are correct, although I also personally prefer paid.

The other one that drives me nuts is lose/loose. That's the one you should really jump on.

"Payed" is a word if you're talking about sealing the deck or hull seams of a wooden ship (according to the dictionary app on my computer).

Both of those dictionaries name just 1-2 specific definitions of "pay" in which "payed" can be used.

This is turning into quite the side debate.
