Ivy Renfroe pitches perfect game

...LVs beat Ole Miss on Sat. 9-0 in five innings. No base runners for Ole Miss... 0. Melissa Davin had her third two-home run game of this season and was also a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk. Really glad that Melissa's family (according to utsports yesterday in her interview) were here from Cali to see her have a perfect day along with Ivy.
Sixteenth straight win, but more importantly, twelve straight SEC wins.

Great game Ivy! Great game Lady Vols!

Ivy started the season as if she lost concentration, but her last eleven or twelve games she has become more and more focused. She is looking great, and she goes after batters. We are blessed to have her and Ellen, not only for their ability, but because they are outstanding people. Looking forward to little sister coming in next year.

Our team has been bearing down and playing more aggressive at the plate. Early on, they seemed to sleepwalk a little, but now they look very much ready to compete in the World Series.

The defense has been very good, and the play Raven made in the 5th today was a thing of beauty. Plays like that inspire everyone on the team. We have had all our players making big plays.

Just keep it up! Go Lady Vols!

My opinion on Ivy. Ivy can bring the heat like only a handful of pitchers in college softball. Like I stated, just my opinion (guess, really)....but I think just possibly like a lot of fastball pitchers (in baseball or softball) ....sometimes her fast one loses a little of the movement it normally has... and if a batter times it right and gets a good swing on a straight fastball ... well, it goes a long way. See Nolan Ryan. Sometimes unhittable, sometimes not.

I'm liking there defense. Might be the key to finally winning it all this year. Got power hitting (which I really like, because I'm not a fan of every other hitter being a slap hitter) got the pitching, and damn sure got the coaching to win it all.

How many bunts do you see in a game?

I have seen HS kids out there slap hitting with no one on. Or with a runner on first and 2 outs.

Slap hitting has become a fad. It is a tool for kids that dont know how to hit properly.

As the previous poster alluded to, slap hitting every other batter is not softball. It is not the way the game is intended to be played, and it is not a very successful recipe for wins.

NOTE: Im not talking specifically about LadyVols softball. I have seen one game all year. Just talking about the freaking slap in general. Kids need to learn how to hit properly.

EDIT: Im sure Brandon Inge wishes he could slap hit in MLB.

With all due respect, you couldn't be more wrong. If the bases were as far apart, and therefor the infield were as deep in fp softball as it is in baseball, then there would be no need to slap hit. However, because of the smaller size field (including the outfield) slap hitting is a necessary strategy for increasing your odds of getting a hit... pure and simple. I understand why you may not like it, but it's a great skill to have along with some natural speed.

I agree...it is a big part of the strategy of the game itself. Men do it also in men's fastpitch....and a good slap hitter (or whatever you wanna call it) like Raven Chavanne can place hit amazingly accurately with line drives to the OF. It's enough to drive the other team crazy....and that's also part of the game. I can see someone not liking it. BTW, it's the pitcher and catcher's jobs to frustrate a slap hitter by pitch selection....plus positioning infielders. I played fastpitch in the service and I like the strategies in the game. Of course the biggest strategy is having a pitcher that no one can lay a bat on.

Can we agree to call it a "Necessary Evil"?

I understand the theory. And I do not believe that I have seen a college game where I wanted to have the slap hit banned from existence. HOWEVER, after coaching a few years of Youth Softball, and trying to coach a few kids up so they can make the HS team, or improve their HS status, I was absolutely frustrated to no end with kids that would slap hit in ANY situation.

So, the college game does not bother me so much. Strategy, skill, etc. Makes it all different (Im still not a fan of the slaphit, but I understand the need/usage at that level)

At the level I was coaching, you have a kid that can beat the crap out of average pitching, and all of the sudden a right hand hitter is standing in the left hand box, and the infield knows exactly what is about to happen. HIT AWAY KID!!

To me it was like they were admitting they couldnt get a hit off the pitcher. Just go hit the ball.

anyways, long story short, I can agree that there is a time/place, while still not likeing it.

Lol. To expand on what you were typing, it's almost like a slap hitter is conceding that the chance of getting a hit is slim, so they just out the ball in play and TOTALLY rely on speed to get on base. Give me a power hitter that can split the gaps, or hit it over the fence any day. And twice on game day!
