Don Grider passed away just a few months ago so this is a significant part of this years’ championship story. The rich football tradition at South Pittsburg is most memorable and if you will indulge me I’ll provide just a few “pieces” of this wonderful tradition. Coach & Principal Phil Beene is a legend at South Pittsburg and positively influenced the lives of many, many people(including myself!). He was one of the most principled men I’ve ever known and was, without doubt, the best motivator I’ve EVER known. He was inducted into the Tennessee Hall of Fame in 1987…and was one of the 11 “Flaming Soph’s” of Neyland’s 1928 squad…who led UT to a 9-0-1 record, including the 15-13 upset of Alabama. So, to this day the influence of Robert Neyland …through Phil Beene, Don Grider and Vic Grider (today’s head coach) is significant. Tennessee’s football tradition is alive and well in South Pittsburg! Congratulations to the players, Coach Grider(Vic & Don) & assistants and the South Pittsburg citizens, who provide such strong support! A legend season…again
good post. i always liked Don Grider. he lit me up with a paddle one year, like no other.
