There was a big gap between 1907 and 1948 when they didn't play each other. I was just wondering if anyone knew why.

It's my understanding that the amount of hatred between the two schools kept them from playing all those years. They could not even agree where to play...thus, the Iron Bowl was started in Birmingham so neither team could clam home-field advantage since the fans in the stands were split 50-50 every year. Now, this may or may not be true, just what I've heard through the years.

The series was suspended after the 1907 game when the schools could not come to agreement over the amount of expenses to be paid players, as well as from where officials for the game should be obtained.

It would take a 1947 resolution by the Alabama House of Representatives to cause the rivalry to be renewed in 1948 where the teams met in Birmingham's Legion Field.

Pretty sad when the State Government must get involved 40 years later.
